JBL VERTEC® Line Arrays Define International Standards At Miss Universe 2008 Pageant in Vietnam

Bi-coastal team of audio specialists with gear from Firehouse Productions and ATK/Audiotek enable live audio support for global broadcast.

The global adoption of JBL VERTEC® line arrays continues to grow with an international flavor as demonstrated by the specification and use of a full-scale VERTEC system for the 57th Miss Universe 2008 pageant. The event took place at the Crown Convention Centre, located at the scenic Diamond Bay Resort on the coast near Nha Trang City, Vietnam. Dayana Mendoza, Miss Venezuela, was crowned Miss Universe 2008 from a field of 80 hopeful contestants. The pageant was broadcast live by NBC in English and Telemundo in Spanish to more than one billion viewers in over 180 nations.

An all-star audio crew from the USA, including A-1 (lead engineer) New York-based Tom Holmes, Los Angeles-based digital console specialist Andrew “Fletch” Fletcher and Firehouse Productions’ system engineer Mark Dittmar, spearheaded the sound system setup, optimization and operation. Staged in a 7,500-seat performance space, the audio system needed to provide precision coverage with sufficient power to be heard throughout the venue, with adequate clarity to meet live broadcast standards. To achieve these goals, the professional audio team turned to VERTEC for the system’s loudspeaker components.

New-York based Firehouse Productions performed system integration functions and pre-event testing before shipping the entire JBL VERTEC system, the first to arrive in Vietnam, to its new owner in that country. “We have all worked extensively with VERTEC line arrays in the past and have found them to be very easy to set up, extremely reliable, and most importantly, they sound great,” said Mark Dittmar, Vice President, Firehouse Productions. “Given the technical requirements for the Miss Universe event, the VERTEC system was a natural fit.”

Additional technical audio support equipment for the production was supplied by ATK/Audiotek of Valencia, CA. “Broadcast events that include live entertainment and music program content have highly specialized requirements,” explained ATK/Audiotek’s technical operations manager Brett Valasek. “When international productions take place in regions like southeast Asia, the sponsors and producers look to the various technical specialists to work out a logistical plan that may include sourcing some local equipment while transporting other items. ATK/Audiotek outfitted the team with some specialty items not readily available in the region.”

For Miss Universe 2008, the sound reinforcement system included a main PA setup of two line arrays, each containing 12 JBL VERTEC VT4889-1 full-size line array elements per side, and a center cluster of six VT4887A compact line array elements. These were enhanced by four JBL SRX728S 2x18” subwoofers per side. The system also featured four VT4887A compact line array elements for front fill. Additionally, the backstage paging system included six JBL EON15 G2 portable loudspeakers. Crown I-Tech 6000 and 4000 amplifiers in custom Firehouse-fabricated electronics racks powered the system, while a dbx DriveRack 4800 loudspeaker management system handled system EQ and signal distribution. All amplification and signal processing functions were remotely controlled and monitored using the Harman HiQnet™ System Architect™ configuration and control software.

Sirius Integrators Provide Crown Audio’s I-Tech Amplifiers For Bruce Springsteen European Tour

Taking advantage of the power and flexibility of Crown’s I-Tech Series amplifiers, Sirius Showequipment AG of Niederdorfelden, Germany provided Audio Analysts with over 100 of Crown’s I-Tech amplifiers for use on the Bruce Springsteen tour throughout Europe. The European leg of the 23-stop tour began with three shows in Dublin, Ireland on May 22nd, 23rd and 24th followed by four shows throughout the U.K. The tour continued in Dusseldorf and Hamburg, Germany with a single appearance in Amsterdam in between on June 18th. Antwerp, Belgium; Milan, Italy; Paris, France and Copenhagen, Denmark were all treated to single-night appearances of “The Boss.” The tour continued to Oslo, Norway and Helsinki, Finland before concluding with four nights in three locations in Spain: San Sebastian, Madrid and Barcelona. The tour then returned to the U.S with a 3-night stint in Springsteen’s home state of New Jersey at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford.

“We chose Crown’s I-Tech amplifiers because they sound great and are extremely easy to use and to install,” said Holger Shader, Technical Director/Senior Engineer. “They work really well with the JBL VerTec line array speakers we are using on the tour. By using HiQnet™ for setup and monitoring, we are able to get a real-time status check on the amplifiers. We were amazed at how quickly and efficiently we were able to setup the racks during each stop on the tour.”

For the tour, Sirius Showequipment AG used I-Tech 4000 amps for the FOH system to power the JBL VT4889 and VT4887 VerTec line array elements. Additionally, I-Tech 8000 amplifiers were used to power the JBL VT4880 arrayable subwoofer.

Audio Analysts’ FOH Engineer for Bruce Springsteen, John Cooper noted, “I really love using Crown’s I-Tech amps on this tour. They are easy to integrate with JBL’s VerTec speakers and the HiQnet system allows us to easily create control pages that we can quickly access.”

The I-Tech amplifiers feature advanced DSP processing which was used for additional adjustment of the JBL arrays. With the built-in LCD screen on the front panel, basic features and amplifier status can be accessed from the amplifier’s location. Additionally, the added convenience of HiQnet networking allows a front of house or monitor engineer to easily monitor an amplifiers status from their location.

Harman Audio Products Finish On Top At 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony

JBL VERTEC® speakers, Crown I-Tech amplifiers and Soundcraft Vi6 Digital Consoles specified for spectacular event sound system design.

In one of the most-watched global media events of the year,the 2008 Summer Olympics opening ceremony in Beijing was held on Friday, August 8 at the newly-constructed Beijing National Stadium (known informally as “The Bird’s Nest”). The Opening Ceremony marked the beginning of the 29th Olympic Summer Games. While the Stadium normally has a capacity of 80,000, an additional 11,000 temporary seats helped accommodate the 91,000 spectators at the ceremony, which lasted nearly four hours, and included four segments: the opening address, artistic performances, entrance of the competing athletes, and lighting of the primary Olympic torch flame inside the stadium.

Composer Tan Dun provided the musical score for the event, which featured more than 15,000 performers and was highlighted by Chinese gymnast Li Ning lighting the Olympic torch. Centered around the theme of "Civilization and Harmony," the spectacular performances, including costuming, sets and overall production effects, were designed by Zhang Yimou, the renowned film director, who aimed to convey the "conception of harmony from an international perspective." Leading-edge projection, lighting and mobile sculpture technologies and an entertainment production stage designed by Mark Fisher were an integral part of the technical production, along with extravagant fireworks displays. Sound Media Fusion facilitated the event audio system design, programming and deployment, which prominently featured JBL VERTEC® line arrays, Crown I-Tech amplifiers and Soundcraft Vi6 digital mixing consoles.

Gary Hardesty (Chief Designer, Audio- Beijing Olympic Ceremonies Department; Technical Consultant, Panasonic for all Olympic Ceremonies and competition/non-competition venues) had the complex but rewarding task of specifying and implementing the massive, multi-zone, distributed sound reinforcement system approach to integrate portable and installed speaker locations.

“All FOP [field of play] speakers needed to be self-powered arrays due to highly restrictive physical space limitations,” explained Sound Media Fusion’s Gary Hardesty. “In the case of the JBL products, I needed small size and a lot of SPL, not to mention predictable coverage. The JBL VERTEC DP systems were part of a very large, distributed, multi-zone system and they performed flawlessly, exceeding my requirements and expectations. The sound quality was very good. Overall, the venue sound for the event was excellent, with an 'in-your-face' direct sound characteristic throughout the audience area. We achieved excellent acoustic isolation from zone to zone with zero intelligibility problems. Even considering the massive venue size, the result was very, very good for all concerned.”

Numerous Harman HiQnet™-compatible VT4888DP-AN powered midsize line array elements and VT4882DP-AN companion subwoofers with JBL DrivePack® technology were selected to cover various portions of the stadium, including array locations dedicated for use in critical end-zone locations.

These were configured as ground-based stacks, each containing two or three enclosures. Arrays were masked with neutral grey weather-protective covers, and many speaker units were installed behind facades and integrated into Hardesty’s overall system design underneath temporary staging platforms, including the 5 Rings Plaza and the National Flags Platform. Additionally, a total of 26 JBL MS-26 ultra-compact fill speakers were dedicated for second tribune and VIP stand fill.

Passive speaker systems were powered by Crown I-T6000 and I-T4000 power amplifiers, compatible with hundreds of other Crown amplifiers installed for the venue’s audio system infrastructure. Additionally, Soundcraft Vi6™ digital consoles were part of the event sound system. In addition to the high-profile event system for the Opening and Closing ceremonies, Harman products have been specified and installed for more than a dozen Olympic venues in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong, including the National Olympics Conference Center, The National Stadium, National Aquatics Center, and Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium, as well as various fencing, softball and equestrian sports facilities.

PA Plus Helps Make Nashville Songwriters The Stars At Avalon Theatre With JBL’s VERTEC® Line Arrays And New V4 DSP

Demonstrating the premium audio fidelity and rider-friendly characteristics of JBL VERTEC® line arrays, PA Plus Productions recently supplied the live sound reinforcement system for “Songwriters Night,” held at the Avalon Theatre at Fallsview Casino in Niagara Falls, Canada. The shows featured six of Nashville’s most successful country songwriters performing hits they have written for Tim McGraw, Reba McEntire, Faith Hill, Vince Gill and many more. The event showcased the songwriting talents of Al Anderson, Bob DiPiero, Tim Nichols, Jeffrey Steele, Craig Wiseman and Tony Mullins, telling the stories that inspired their most popular songs, followed by all six performing each song together.

PA Plus deployed an “in-the-round” setup providing 360 degrees of coverage, with six line arrays each containing eight VERTEC VT4887 compact line array elements. PA Plus also used 16 JBL MS26 compact loudspeakers for front fills. Powered by Crown I-Tech amplifiers, the system was remotely controlled and monitored via the Harman HiQnet™ System Architect™ platform.

In addition to the temporary sound system deployed for the “Songwriters Night” event, PA Plus recently installed the permanent sound reinforcement system at the 1,500-seat Avalon Theatre, which includes a left-right configuration of 10 VT4888 midsize line array elements per side, along with six VT4880 arrayable subwoofers per side. Crown I-Tech amplifiers power the new house system, which also includes AKG microphones, BSS Audio DPR dynamics and dbx 162SL compressor/limiters.

With Reba McEntire loading in right after the final Songwriters Night performance, PA Plus left the existing VERTEC midsize house system in place and flew the standalone VERTEC compact system for the Songwriters Night in-the-round show. In order to expedite loadout after the Songwriters Night events, PA Plus took full advantage of the configuration functionality available in the venue’s Crown I-Tech amplifier installation. “Power and processing for the portable VT4887 system was achieved by simply tying into the existing speaker lines in the overhead production grid and loading the corresponding JBL V4 DSP presets into the Crown I-Tech amplifiers,” said Mark Radu, Systems Engineer for PA Plus. “A simple re-patch in the grid and preset recall was all that was required to ready the system for Reba McEntire.”

According to Radu, the acoustic music content of the show was a perfect match for the VT4887’s. “This was the first chance I had to work with JBL’s new V4 DSP presets for driving 4887’s with I-Tech,” he said. “I was much closer to the desired end result right out of the box with V4 presets, while the system as a whole sounded much more coherent from top to bottom. I was happy with the improvements [JBL’s Director of Tour Sound Product and Application Engineering] Paul Bauman and JBL Engineering have made with the rest of the VERTEC DSP presets, and his work on the VT4887’s proved just as impressive.”

DPA Soundco Brings Power To The Masses At Roskilde Festival With JBL VERTEC® Line Arrays and V4 DSP Presets

Demonstrating the industry-leading sound, reliable coverage characteristics and easy setup features of JBL VERTEC® line arrays, more than 67,000 fans flocked to Roskilde, Denmark this year to witness Roskilde Festival 2008, the largest annual rock music festival in Northern Europe. This year’s Roskilde Festival featured performances by Radiohead, Neil Young, Gnarls Barkley, My Bloody Valentine, Jay-Z and many more.

DPA Soundco A/S of Soborg, Denmark, once again provided concert sound services for the legendary festival. A total of 60 VT4889 full-size line array elements were suspended using ground-support trussing structures which flanked the festival's unique, orange tensile-membrane outdoor stage covering. Each main left/right array included 18 VT4889's, supplemented with out-fill array hangs of 12 boxes each. DPA Soundco’s Paul Hammann and Claus Pedersen headed the onsite crew responsible for system deployment and operation.

"This is the first year we have deployed JBL's VERTEC system for Roskilde, after using another system for many years," advised Sten Jensen of DPA Soundco. "The large VERTEC system went up very quickly. We relied on JBL's new V4 DSP presets and found that we did not have to use very much EQ on the system. The long-throw capabilities were as expected, so some additional delay arrays that had been provided on towers at 50 meters (164 feet) out from the stage were more to bring in some additional high-frequency energy than for providing any additional output power, as there was a constant headwind of up to 8-12 meters per second [18-27 miles per hour]."

JBL VT4888 midsize line array elements were used to cover areas close to the stage. "The front fill system that we had designed for the event worked well for the audience pits in the middle, intended for a throw out to about 25 meters from the stage," explained Jensen. "Each year we make gradual adjustments and improvements to the overall sound system, and we already have ideas for refining our approach for next year."

Jensen noted that the sound crew and guest engineers were very pleased with the overall results. "We were especially happy with summation of the main and the offstage VERTEC array hangs. And, we were able to get perforated net in front of the offstage speakers (rather than solid plastic) so this was a help," he observed. "All in all we were quite pleased with the performance of the system. We think that VERTEC will experience a second wave of interest and excitement in the industry, with JBL's new V4 DSP presets."

Harman Sound System Takes Center Stage At Hollywood High’s Auditorium

System Featuring JBL Professional VERTEC® Loudspeakers, Crown I-Tech Amplifiers, Soundcraft Vi4 Mixing Console Joins The Cast At Hitmaker High School.

As the sound system provider of choice to some of the world’s most high-profile concert tours, the most successful blockbuster movie presentations and the most prestigious recording studios, it is only fitting that the Harman Pro Group was selected to provide components for a brand new PA system for the 1000-seat auditorium at Hollywood High School, a veritable star-making machine that has earned a far-reaching reputation for its remarkably progressive and prolific drama program. The sound system was designed and installed by Richard Ralke, President of L.A. The alumni rolls from Hollywood High School reads like a Who’s Who of movie history. Dynaco Serves Venezuela’s Festival Movistar Musica 2008 With Powered JBL VERTEC® Line Array System

Showcasing the international adoption of JBL Professional VERTEC® line arrays, Corporacion Dynaco C.A. in Venezuela provided concert sound rental services for two of the largest events held during Festival Movistar Musica 2008. Movistar, a division of the Spanish telecommunications company, Telefonica sponsored the festival. More than 25,000 people were attracted to the production sites, which each featured eight major international artists from Venezuela, Spain, Argentina, and Colombia like Los Amigos Invisibles, Caramelos de Cianuro, Chino y Nacho, Diego Torres, and David Bisbal. The May 8 event was held at the Zulia State capitol of Maracaibo’s baseball stadium, and the May 10 event took place in Caracas, at the Universidad de Venezuela’s baseball stadium.

Dynaco deployed 36 JBL Professional VT4888DP-AN midsized powered line array elements equipped with JBL DrivePack® technology for the main left/right arrays and four VT4888DP-AN elements as near fills. Each side also featured eight VT4887 compact line array elements in use for out fill arrays, and a delay tower at the back of the front-of-house area included six VT4887 loudspeakers powered by Crown I-Tech 6000 amplifiers. Other Harman products in the system at the front-of-house position included BSS 366T loudspeaker management systems, BSS Varicurve and FCS960 graphic equalizers providing options for program EQ, along with Lexicon PCM96, PCM70, PCM60 and PCM42 effects processors. Additional signal processing available to band sound mixers included dbx 903 compressors and BSS DPR-901 II dynamic equalizers.

The stage setup was comprised of several rolling risers and the four drum sets were pre-mic’ed at all times. There were also two complete percussion setups with everything available on multi-pin sub-snakes, which enabled the sound crew to roll out the exiting band and roll in the next band in 10 minutes or less.

Harman Pro's HiQnet™ System Architect™ software was used for remote control and monitoring of the powered loudspeaker system arrays, along with traditional power amplifiers used for supplemental speakers in the system. System engineer Guillermo Sanchez of Dynaco noted the highly useful characteristics of JBL VERTEC powered DP Series speaker systems by describing the ability to have direct control of the DSP in each speaker as well as load-monitoring capability for everything in the entire sound reinforcement system during the show. “Combined with the Crown amplifiers in use on the same network, this gave our audio team performance confirmation for each zone of the system, including things not in the direct listening field for the technicians, such as near fills, out fills, signal delay arrays and such," Sanchez said. “The remote control and monitoring system and internal DSP features gave the sound team a high degree of control over the entire system, including the subwoofer arrays, which provided smooth, even low frequency coverage throughout the venue.”

Throughout the festival, Dynaco’s JBL VERTEC line array system received compliments from musicians, band engineers, and promoters for the outstanding performance and versatility of the system, Sanchez noted.

“Technically, the system achieved +/- 3 dB from 100Hz to 8KHz behind the mix position, 40 meters (131 feet) from the stage, with significant amounts of low-frequency output available as required,” he explained. “The system’s H.F. response was measured to be 114 dB at the mix position, slow-response mode with C-weighted filtering.”

New Line Array System Owners In Oklahoma And Texas Power Into Busy Summer Season With JBL VERTEC®

NORTHRIDGE, California – Four southwestern regional rental production and staging companies have each recently chosen JBL's VERTEC® line array systems for use in their audio rental business operations. With each firm adopting the same midsize powered models from JBL Professional's industry-leading VERTEC family of line array systems, a significant new rental pool of compatible sound systems is now available to meeting planners, touring productions and event managers in the nation's heartland. New JBL VerTec Powered Full Size Line Arrays With Drivepack Technology Are Life Of The Party At San Diego's Cinco De Mayo Festival

May 29, 2008 —Showcasing the newest additions in JBL’s VERTEC® line array series, local rental company Meeting Services, Inc. provided sound reinforcement for the La Fiesta Del Pueblo Cinco de Mayo music festival at the Del Mar Fairgrounds’ outdoor grandstand in San Diego with a powered, full-size system. Featured entertainers for the multi-act festival included popular Latin artists La Arrolladora Banda El Limon, Vilma Diaz y La Sonora, and Los Moonlights, among many others.

Meeting Services deployed JBL’s new VERTEC DP Series powered full-size models for La Fiesta Del Pueblo, which drew a crowd of more than 10,000 people and was broadcast by Univision, the leading Spanish-language television company in the United States and Puerto Rico. The system included four stage-stacked arrays. Onstage arrays each featured five VT4889ADP-AN Full Range High Directivity Line Array Elements. Additionally, six VT4880ADP-AN Ultra Long Excursion Arrayable Subwoofers were positioned in a center array in front of the stage. Nokia Theatre Goes Live in L.A. With JBL VerTec Line Arrays

Demonstrating the rider-friendly characteristics of JBL Professional VERTEC® line arrays, IPR Services recently sold and installed the new permanent sound reinforcement system at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles. The 7,100-seat performance venue features a massive VERTEC line array system, based around VT4889 large-format line array elements.

Located in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, the Nokia Theatre is part of L.A. Live, a 4 million-square-foot, $2.5 billion sports, residential and entertainment district adjacent to the Staples Center and Los Angeles Convention Center. The venue offers guests the intimacy of a mid-sized performance venue, with no seat further than 220 feet from the stage. Since opening, the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live has hosted performances by The Eagles, The Dixie Chicks, Neil Young, John Fogerty and Mary J. Blige, among others. This week the venue featured two scheduled nights of performances by rock power-trio Rush, with veteran soundmixer Brad Madix at front-of-house. “I am really liking the way Brad has the system sounding,” noted Keith Evans, in charge of the house sound system for the venue. “Very powerful, detailed and dynamic.”

With the goal of providing an audio system that would fully meet the demands of such accomplished artists as Rush who have a keen focus on sound quality, IPR Services installed a left/right line array configuration featuring 12 VT4889 large-format line array elements per side, four VT4889 line array elements per side for out fill, and two center arrays of three VT4889 line array elements each for down fill. Two flown center arrays of 11 VT4880A arrayable subwoofers (22 total) combine with left/right onstage stacks of eight VT4880A arrayable subwoofer per side to form an overall LCR subwoofer configuration with individual subwoofer arrays configured in forward/reverse firing cardioid mode. Coverage is complemented by two VT4889 line array elements integrated with the left/right subwoofer ground stacks and stage lip front fills consisting of six VT4887A compact line array loudspeakers. Crown amplifiers power the system, which also includes two Soundcraft Vi6 digital consoles.

According to Bob Patrick, owner of IPR Services, the decision to install VERTEC line arrays hinged on the product’s sonic qualities and rider-friendly attributes. “It’s important to have a rider-friendly system and VERTEC is one of the most rider-friendly line arrays in the industry,” he said. “Additionally, we have had tremendous success with VERTEC in past projects, such as the WaMu Theater in Seattle. B.A.L.S. Deploys JBL VerTec For Rod Stewart Stadium Show In Buenos Aires

Demonstrating the global acceptance, premium sound and maximum output capabilities of JBL Professional VERTEC® line arrays, Buenos Aires Live Show (B.A.L.S.) deployed a large VERTEC system for Rod Stewart’s recent concert at Velez Sarsfield Stadium in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The show was part of Rod Stewart’s current world tour supporting his latest release, “Still The Same…Great Rock Classics of our Time.”

The April 11th concert at Velez Sarsfield Stadium drew a sell-out crowd of 40,000 people. To meet Stewart’s concert rider specifications, B.A.L.S. used a total of 52 VERTEC line array enclosures. The main left/right arrays featured 14 VT4889-1 full-size line array elements per side, with 12 VT4889-1 elements per side for out fill arrays. For additional low-frequency output, B.A.L.S. used both stacked and flown subwoofers—a total of 32 enclosures—to complement the full-range VERTEC system. JBL’s new VERTEC V4 DSP presets were used.

JBL's new VT4889-1 full-size line array loudspeaker offers all of the performance and high-output advantages of the original VT4889, in a more affordable enclosure constructed from JBL's exclusive PlyMax® engineered-wood material. It is acoustically and mechanically compatible with JBL’s VT4889 full-size line array loudspeaker.

"The system provided very clear sound, with a good, punchy presence," noted Federico Sainz, Chief Engineer for B.A.L.S. "Both of Rod Stewart's engineers, the FOH mixer and the system engineer, were very satisfied. I think the VERTEC rig gave us a great performance. We had good intelligibility all the way to the very last rows of the stadium seating [more than 100 meters from the stage]. We did have signal-delayed arrays set up in the rear as requested by the touring production, but those ended up being used at only 50 percent of the anticipated level."

Dynaco C.A. And Powered JBL VerTec Line Arrays Rock Caracas With Marc Anthony

Demonstrating the continued international success of JBL VERTEC® line arrays, Corporacion Dynaco C.A. recently provided sound reinforcement for an outdoor concert in Venezuela featuring Marc Anthony. The show took place at the University of Caracas Baseball Stadium and drew an audience of approximately 15,000 people.


One of the most popular salsa artists of all time, Marc Anthony has sold more than 10 million albums worldwide and has been awarded 12 Latin and Standard gold and platinum certifications by the RIAA. He also earned a GRAMMY in 1998 for Best Latin/Tropical Performance (“Contra La Corriente”) and has won three Latin GRAMMY Awards.

For the concert in Caracas, Dynaco set up a total of 32 VERTEC VT4888DP-AN powered midsize line array elements equipped with JBL DrivePack® technology and optional Harman HiQnet™-compatible input modules. These were configured as two arrays of 16 boxes each. In addition, eight VT4887 compact line array elements were used as frontfills, and a 6-box array of VT4887’s was used as a signal-delayed array behind the front-of-house mix position. The VT4887’s, along with Dynaco’s proprietary subwoofers and all stage monitor speakers in use, were powered by Crown I-Tech amplifiers. BSS 366T Loudspeaker Management Systems and

BSS Varicurves were used for main system signal processing and system driver functions. Remote control and monitoring of the system, including adjustment of signal processing for the various speaker zones, was achieved with HiQnet System Architect Software, configured on a MacBook Pro running MS Windows.

JBL VerTec Line Arrays Take Center Stage At Gallo Center For The Arts

Demonstrating the rider-friendly performance and ease of installation of JBL Professional VERTEC® line arrays, audio consultant Media Systems Design Group oversaw the design of the sound reinforcement system at the new Gallo Center for the Arts in Modesto, California. The Gallo Center is a $40 million complex that includes two performance spaces: the Mary Stuart Rogers Theatre (1,250 seats) and the Foster Family Theatre (444 seats).

The Gallo Center for the Arts is a non-profit organization owned by Modesto County designed to enrich the quality of life in California’s Central Valley by providing an inspirational civic gathering place where regional, national and international cultural activities illuminate, educate and entertain. The Gallo Center celebrates the diversity of the Central Valley by offering an array of affordable cultural opportunities designed to appeal, and be accessible, to all.

During the design process, the decision was made to integrate a line array system in a left-right configuration at the Mary Stuart Rogers Theatre. “Until a few years ago, performance halls didn’t always invest a lot of money in fixed systems,” said Timothy Hart, Principal, Media Systems Design Group. “The venues would typically rent equipment for different events, but the growth in touring circuits, combined with the desire to provide rider-friendly systems, led to many more venues installing larger, permanent audio systems. It’s also a revenue-generating stream for the venues, because money isn’t being spent on a rental system every time there’s a show.”

With these rider-friendly specifications in mind, Media Systems Design Group recommended VERTEC line arrays for the Mary Stuart Rogers Theatre’s front-of-house system. “We looked at a number of different line arrays, and VERTEC has a wide acceptance in the industry, which was a primary concern,” Hart said. “Additionally, JBL’s in-house engineering support was very helpful in working with us on the design to ensure the products and configurations were ideal for the space.”

The audio system at the Mary Stuart Rogers Theatre includes a left-right configuration of nine VERTEC VT4888 midsize line array elements per side, along with two VT4882 midsize arrayable subwoofers per side. Crown I-Tech amplifiers power the system. The Foster Family Theatre features a left-right configuration of six JBL VRX932LA portable line arrays per side, with four stage-mounted VRX918S portable line array subwoofers.

According to Henry Beaumont of PCD, Inc., the systems integrator on the project, the easy setup and reliable performance of the VERTEC line arrays helped overcome the short time frame within which the system needed to be installed. “The rigging on the VERTEC line arrays is so well engineered that we were able to set up the system and have it sounding great almost immediately,” he said. “This project clearly demonstrates JBL’s ability to meet the demands of performing artists, tour sound professionals and systems integrators alike.”

Harrah's Resort Atlantic City Wins Big With JBL VerTec, VRX And Control Contractor Loudspeakers

Demonstrating JBL Professional’s ability to provide loudspeaker solutions for all environments, Harrah’s Resort Atlantic City recently renovated its pool area, coffee shop and food court. The renovated areas feature new sound reinforcement systems that include JBL VERTEC® line arrays, VRX portable line arrays and Control® Contractor ceiling speakers.

The pool at Harrah’s Resort Atlantic City is housed under a 200-foot-round by 80-foot-high glass dome and hosts numerous events during evening hours as part of Harrah’s “The Pool After Dark” program. Since many of these events feature live DJs and performers, Harrah’s purchased a “performance” system that could be set up during events, as well as a permanent system for daily use.

The permanent system at the pool features 10 VRX932LAP powered, portable line arrays and two VRX918SP powered, portable subwoofers. Twelve cabanas line the pool, with VRX loudspeakers placed on top of the cabanas, evenly dispersed around the pool area. To control the system, dbx DriveRack 4800 loudspeaker management systems were installed.

Components of the performance system are set up in all four corners of the pool area. Each corner contains a line array comprised of four VERTEC VT4887ADP compact powered line array elements and two VT4881ADP compact powered subwoofers, with another two

VT4881ADP subwoofers flanking each array at the bottom. To provide concert-quality sound during events, the arrays are staged in the corners and rolled out nightly. dbx DriveRack 4800 loudspeaker management systems are in use as well.

According to Jim Esher, Entertainment Technology Manager for Harrah’s Entertainment, the decision to install powered loudspeakers was a matter of aesthetics and efficiency. “Going with self-powered speakers made the most sense because the pool area is an oasis environment, so from a cosmetic standpoint there wasn’t much desire to have amp racks in that space,” he said. “We were able to put three outlets in the flower beds and gardens and we can roll the VERTEC line arrays out as ‘caterpillars’ and have the entire system up and running in half an hour.”

The new coffee shop at Harrah’s, “Reflections,” opened on President’s Day weekend and contains six zones of audio with more than 50 JBL Control 26CT in-ceiling loudspeakers. In the food court, three zones of audio contain another 20 Control 26CT loudspeakers. Both systems are driven by Crown CTs amplifiers with BSS Soundweb London BLU-80 signal processors.

With much of the Harrah’s property built around an infrastructure comprised of Harman components, it made sense to stick with a winning formula. “I have to maintain a UL listing for all the audio systems I install and JBL was one of the first companies to recognize that their speakers need to be UL listed,” Esher said. “We have installed Control Contractor ceiling speakers throughout the Harrah’s and Caesar’s Palace casinos and the support from JBL has always been fantastic. This was also true with the VERTEC system, where JBL and our regional representative Sigmet Marketing spent an entire weekend training our staff on setting up the system. It’s been a great relationship from the beginning.”

Audio Visual Professional Group And JBL VerTec Powered Line Arrays Perform For LeAnn Rimes In Concert

Demonstrating the versatility and convenience of JBL VERTEC® DP Series powered line arrays, Audio Video Professional Group (AVPG) of The Woodlands, Texas, recently provided the audio system for The E.C.H.O. Foundation’s “Under The Moonlight” Gala, featuring award-winning country songstress LeAnn Rimes. The system included VERTEC compact powered line array elements with JBL DrivePack® technology.

With more than 25 combined years in the industry, AVPG is a leading supplier of production services for the greater Houston area, providing a wide range of services to satisfy its customers' changing media and technology needs. In February 2007, AVPG Owner Mike Rape added VERTEC powered line array loudspeakers to his company’s inventory, purchasing 16 VT4887ADP compact powered line array elements and six VT4881ADP powered subwoofers.

“We purchased the powered VERTEC models because I needed a versatile PA system,” Rape said. “We do lots of outdoor festivals and lots of indoor corporate events. The combination of compact size and large sound gives us the flexibility to hang in an outdoor system for 2-3,000 people, yet is small enough to hang in a ballroom setting without being overpowering. We have used the VERTEC line arrays on many corporate events and the loudspeakers not only sound good, but they’re visually sleek and discreet as well.”

For LeAnn Rimes’ concert at the Woodlands Waterway Marriott, AVPG deployed eight VT4887ADP line array elements per side, supplemented with three VT4881ADP subwoofers per side. Additionally, AVPG used JBL VRX932LAP portable line array loudspeakers for front fill, powered by Crown I-Tech 4000 amplifiers. The system was remotely controlled and monitored via Harman HiQnet System Architect software, with a dbx DriveRack 4800 Loudspeaker Management System for overall system gain-control and signal processing.

According to Chris Krumins, Senior Production Manager for AVPG, the VERTEC system performed flawlessly. “We used JBL’s VERTEC Line Array Calculator software and were able to predict in advance the even dispersion we achieved throughout the room,” he said. “The VERTEC system is so easy to hang and the sound is always reliable.”

Despite the event being located below another simultaneous show featuring KC and the Sunshine Band, AVPG’s new system provided enough power to eliminate the effects of any acoustical leakage through the ceiling. “I was concerned about the subwoofers on the floor upstairs being a problem, but when our sound check started, even their room upstairs started shaking!” Rape said. “So needless to say we didn’t hear a peep from them.”

Demonstrating the power and performance of JBL Professional VERTEC® line arrays, San Diego-based Meeting Services, Inc. provided the audio system for the general sessions, including the Opening Keynote, at the 2008 NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) Show in Las Vegas, Nevada. The live sound system features the new VERTEC VT4889ADP full-size powered line array loudspeaker and VT4880ADP powered arrayable subwoofer.

Held at the Barron Room in the Las Vegas Hilton, this year’s Opening Keynote Session featured actor/director Tim Robbins and news anchor Charles Osgood, as well as NAB President/CEO David Rehr. The event drew an attendance of more than 2,000 people. Additionally, the audio system at the Barron Room was used for other general sessions throughout the duration of the show.

“This being the premier show for the broadcast industry, the eyes of the world are upon you,” said Ken Freeman of Meeting Services. “The entire show is broadcast live on the Internet at this point, so it’s a sound reinforcement application with a huge broadcast element. There’s no room for error.”

The front-of-house system at the Barron Room includes a left/right configuration of five VT4889ADP line array elements per side, with a ground-stacked left/right arrangement of two VT4880ADP arrayable subwoofers per side. Four VRX928 portable, compact line array loudspeakers provide outfill, while another pair of VRX928 loudspeakers were flown in the lighting rig for stage foldback. Additionally, a pair of VRX932LA portable line array loudspeakers were used as a center cluster.

Show producer Mark Layton of Layton Productions from Orem, Utah remarked, “This was the best sounding NAB show ever. Even Bob Barker [2008 NAB Broadcasting Hall of Fame inductee] noticed that he could go anywhere in the room and be clearly heard.”

According to Freeman, Meeting Services’ purchase of the new full-size powered VERTEC line array loudspeakers has already reaped benefits. “One of the challenges we face in all venues is an issue of size and space because everyone is asking for products with smaller footprints,” he said. “So having onboard power on these VERTEC loudspeakers saves a lot of space, and the Crown amplification is second to none.”

Sun Light & Sound And JBL VerTec Line Arrays Rock The Desert In Dubai

In one of the Middle East’s most popular annual live music events, production equipment rental company Sun Light & Sound (SLS) Productions deployed a JBL Professional VERTEC® line array system for Dubai Desert Rock Festival 2008. Held March 7-8 at Dubai Festival City, UAE (United Arab Emirates), Dubai Desert Rock Festival 2008 drew more than 28,000 fans over two days.

Dubai Desert Rock Festival 2008 marked the Festival’s fifth anniversary. As in years past, the Festival showcased some of the world’s most popular hard rock and heavy metal acts, including Korn, Velvet Revolver, Machine Head and As I Lay Dying. With the goal of providing sonic clarity while matching the power of the Festival’s high-energy performances, Sun Light & Sound provided an elaborate audio system that included a total of 90 VERTEC line array elements.

The PA included main hangs of 12 VT4889 full-size line array elements per side, complemented by six VT4880 full-size arrayable subwoofers per side. Eight VT4887 compact line array elements were suspended to provide down fill, with five VT4888 mid-size line array elements hung per side for additional out fill. Twelve JBL VT4880A Ultra-Long Excursion subwoofers were stacked on each side of the stage for added low-frequency output, with four VT4887 compact line array elements on hand for front fill. Lastly, three arrays of six VT4888 mid-size line array elements each were set up at the front of house position to serve as delays. Crown Macro-Tech and I-Tech amplifiers powered the entire system.

Ten Years After Audio Serves Major Thai Rock Concert With JBL VerTec Line Arrays

In a unique application that underscores the continued worldwide adoption of JBL Professional VERTEC® line arrays, Ten Years After Audio (TYAA), one of the leading audio rental firms in Thailand, provided the live sound system for the recent Assanee and Wasan Ram-Rai Concert at Rajamangala National Stadium in Bangkok. TYAA deployed VERTEC line arrays throughout the entire venue.

Brothers Assanee and Wasan Chotikul are popular, pioneering Thai rock artists. With a strong following of local fans and support by Thailand’s music industry for over 20 years, Assanee and Wasan are being heralded for having brought back the classic rock era of the ‘70s and 80s. Their latest production, the Assanee and Wasan Ram-Rai Concert, drew a sell-out attendance of more than 50,000 rock music fans. The event, organized by GMM Live in coordination with More Music, was hailed as the country’s biggest live music concert of the year in 2007.

The audio system included a total of 54 VERTEC VT4889 full-size line array elements, configured as 30 enclosures for left and right main arrays serving the open field, with four clusters of six VT4889 line array elements each for delay fill to the rear audience areas in the stadium’s seating rows. In addition, six VT4888 mid-size line array elements were employed as out fill for increased horizontal coverage. A total of 36 VT4880 full-size arrayable subwoofers were co-located with the main left and right arrays to provide extended low-frequency support for high-level music. All VERTEC loudspeakers were powered by a total of 70 Crown MA-5002VZ amplifiers.

Signal processing for all loudspeaker arrays was handled by six BSS Audio FDS-366T Loudspeaker Management Systems running JBL’s new V4 DSP presets, each working independently for their own zones. All incoming signal feeds for the BSS drive units came directly from the front-of-house mixer, for which Ten Years After Audio selected Soundcraft’s new flagship digital mixing console, the Vi6 Digital Live Sound Console. The event marked the first time a digital mixing console has been deployed for a major special event in the venue. All connectivity between the Stage Box of the Vi6 and the Local Rack in the FOH area was achieved via fiber-optic cable.

On Cue Systems Helps Spread The Word At Barack Obama's "Stand For Change" Rally With JBL VerTec Line Array

NORTHRIDGE, CALIFORNIA, March 7, 2008 — Demonstrating the ease of rigging and superior coverage of JBL VERTEC® line arrays, live sound and lighting production company On Cue Systems of Phoenix, AZ recently provided the sound reinforcement system for a Barack Obama presidential campaign rally at Phoenix Veterans Memorial Stadium in Arizona. The “Stand For Change” rally drew more than 13,000 supporters and included appearances by Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano and Caroline Kennedy.

On Cue Systems deployed a VERTEC line array system consisting of a left/right arrangement of 12 VT4889 full-size line array elements per side, with 10 VT4880 full-size arrayable subwoofers per side. Additionally, On Cue Systems set up six VT4889 line array elements each for two outfill side hangs.

According to Dan Myers, System Technician for On Cue Systems, the event drew larger crowds than expected. “The campaign staff was only expecting five or six thousand people to show up, so it was amazing to see twice that many in attendance,” he reported.

Nevertheless, the audio system provided premium fidelity, adequate coverage and plenty of power. “The temporary rally stage where Senator Obama spoke was situated about 30 feet out in front of the existing main stage where the PA was hung,” Myers said. “However, I was still able to get enough level and gain-before-feedback from the system even though the stage was so far out in front, and even during times when his supporters cheered loudly. You could still hear his words over the exuberant noise of the crowd.”

In addition to the performance of the VERTEC line arrays, Myers noted, the loudspeakers’ light weight and simple easy to use suspension system facilitated a quick system setup. “The VERTEC system is extremely easy to rig and hang, and we used JBL’s VERTEC Line Array Calculator to determine the exact system configuration and splay angles,” Myers said.

Due to their suitability for use at high-profile televised events in large multi-purpose venues, JBL VERTEC VT4889 arrays have also been specified for use at both the upcoming 2008 Democratic and Republican National Conventions.

New Powered VRX Portable Line Arrays From JBL Raise Standard Of Performance For Mobile DJ's And Musicians

FRANKFURT, GERMANY, 12 March 2008 — Addressing the MI market’s growing demands for loudspeaker technology that is on par with the world’s most sophisticated staging systems, JBL Professional is showcasing its new VRX932LAP 12-inch powered loudspeaker and the VRX918SP 18-inch powered subwoofer. The new powered VRX models incorporate the same innovative engineering found in JBL’s groundbreaking VERTEC® line arrays and offer built-in amplification from Crown, providing mobile DJ’s and musicians with accessibility to world-class, professional-grade technology.

Utilizing the JBL DrivePack® DPC-2 amplification system designed in cooperation with Crown, both models are fully self-contained, powered loudspeakers. Retaining all the features of the original VRX932LA and VRX918S, self-powered performance has been optimized through integrated DSP, creating the simplest professional powered line array system in the industry.

Designed for use in arrays of up to five units, the VRX932LAP is the ideal choice when line array performance is needed but the venue size does not call for the long-throw characteristics of large line array systems. The VRX932LAP is a 12-inch, two-way powered line array loudspeaker featuring a DPC-2 amplifier module that provides 1750 Watts of peak power. A DSP-based resident input module provides system optimization and equalization.

The VRX932LAP features JBL Professional’s latest 2408J Annular Ring Diaphragm HF driver technology. The Constant Curvature Waveguide mounts three compression drivers on a continuous arc. When additional VRX932LAP loudspeakers are added to the array, the uninterrupted arc continues. In effect, all the drivers work together as if they were a single driver on a very long waveguide. Since there are three drivers in each VRX932LAP loudspeaker, the combined power handling and acoustic output of the system is far greater than a single driver could achieve.

The VRX932LAP uses “amplitude shading” to shape the coverage of the array. For example, switches on the input plate control the output of each high-frequency section in the array. This allows users to set the upper enclosures in an array configuration to deliver more output to reach a distant balcony, while the lower box is shaded back to reduce excessive levels at the front of the listening area. This creates a more coherent sound field.

One or two VRX932LAP loudspeakers may also be used on a tripod or over JBL VRX918SP, VRX918S or SRX718S subwoofers. The integrated rigging hardware is used to securely lock the array together while the dual-angle pole socket provides aiming flexibility. Suspended applications require the JBL VRX-AF array frame or eye bolts.

Designed specifically for use in arrays with the VRX932LAP, the VRX918SP is a powered subwoofer system containing a 2268FF neodymium magnet patented Differential Drive®, 18-inch woofer in a front-loaded, vented enclosure. The VRX918SP features a built-in JBL DrivePack DPC-2 amplifier module designed in cooperation with Crown that provides 1500 Watts of peak power. A DSP-based resident input module provides system optimization, EQ and crossover functionality.

The VRX918SP is equally at home in ground-stacked applications and is equipped with a top-mounted, threaded, 20-millimeter socket that can receive the optional SS4-BK pole. The VRX918SP’s enclosure is constructed of top quality birch plywood, coated in JBL’s rugged DuraFlex™ finish and is heavily braced to maximize low-frequency performance. The attractive CNC-machined, 16-gauge steel grille is internally lined with acoustically transparent foam to provide additional driver protection. The rear of the enclosure is fitted with T-nuts with may be used to attach the optional WK-4S caster kit.

“Since its introduction, the VRX Series has revolutionized the industry’s view of line arrays by incorporating JBL Professional’s legendary VERTEC line array technology into more compact enclosures, bringing line array performance to a greater variety of markets,” Jones added. “VRX loudspeakers have been widely adopted not only in portable applications, but fixed installation environments such as houses of worship.
