Church on the Move Keeps Sound Consistent With A Complete Harman Solution For Its Newly Expanded Worship Center

Demonstrating the comprehensive range of audio solutions available from Harman Professional, North Carolina-based system designer Strategic Connections recently upgraded the sound system for the newly expanded Church on the Move in Tulsa, Oklahoma.  The new sound reinforcement system features JBL loudspeakers, Crown amplifiers, and BSS processing.

Already the largest church in the region, the 12,000-member church chose to remodel its existing main sanctuary by adding an additional 700 seats. 

At the heart of the new sound reinforcement system are 38 JBL VerTec® VT4888 midsize line array elements flown in four arrays with 16 JBL ASB6128V subwoofers, 10 flown and six located under the stage. For front fills, seven JBL AC28/95 loudspeakers are housed behind the perimeter of the stage. “The goal was to provide rock and roll style PA without filling the space with tons of speakers,” stated Brant Doell, system designer for Strategic Connections.

Doell said the decision to choose JBL was easy once the scope of the project became clear. “We did look at other vendors to start with until the number of boxes and racks were growing past our size limitations. JBL offers more for the dollar and size of their boxes than the competitors and they had all the gear in stock to ship that same week we ordered it.”

The system is powered by 49 Crown MA5000i amplifiers and 10 CTs 2000 and CTs 3000 amplifiers with control and routing handled by BSS Soundweb London BLU-160 processors, all networked via Harman HiQnet™ System Architect™. “Having the entire system on the network from one location allows us to handle troubleshooting sessions from our office to help insure the customer has the best support possible,” added Doell.

"The system sounds great and six months after the install was completed, no corrective equalization or system adjustments have been necessary.  Pastor Willie George was excited that his voice could be heard clearly and dynamically throughout the room without hurting the front rows and Audio Director, Andrew Stone, has been quite pleased with the clarity, punch and consistency being delivered to every seat,” said Doell.

Parx Casino Goes All In With AKG’s Versatile WMS4500 Wireless Microphone System Designed By PTC Group, Inc.

In a fixed installation that underscores the dependability and unparalleled versatility of AKG’s wireless microphone systems, PTC Group, Inc. recently designed a multi-unit WMS4500 system to drive nightly live performances in Parx Casino’s bustling 360 Ultra Lounge in Bensalem, Pennsylvania. Coupled with a set of AKG C5 handheld microphones for vocals, D40 mics for instruments and a number of D 112 and CK 99 L microphones inside the drum set, the wireless microphone system is being used by a wide variety of bands and DJs every night, and acts as the centrepiece to a complete Harman Professional sound system that includes JBL VerTec line arrays, Crown amplifiers, and a Soundcraft Si2 digital mixing console.

According to system designer Nathan Powell, president of PTC Group, Inc., the AKG wireless microphone system gives the 360 Ultra Lounge a level of performance, usability, and efficiency that other wireless microphone systems cannot.

“For a busy club-setting like the 360 Ultra Lounge, where we have a different act using the equipment every single night, the versatility of the AKG equipment is absolutely essential,” commented Powell. “The environmental scan and rehearsal functions allow us to easily program the right channels and just hand the mics off; the backlit display on the transmitters and receivers make it extremely easy to program each unit; and the audio quality is clear and precise.”

The WMS4500 was designed to maximize performance with an ultra-compact design. With a complete system made up of the SR4500 receiver, an HT4500 handheld transmitter, a PT4500 Bodypack transmitter, and a CU 4000 charging unit, the WMS 4500 offers two new frequency bands in the range of 500-530 MHz and 570–600 MHz - a feature that grants it the versatility needed to operate in a space like Parx Casino. BSS Audio® Adds Telephone Hybrid Card Option To Soundweb™ London Conferencing Solution

BSS Audio®, a Harman International Company (NYSE-HAR), today added the Soundweb™ London Telephone Hybrid Card to its conferencing portfolio. The new Soundweb London Telephone Hybrid Card complements the highly-regarded Soundweb London AEC Input Card and the two cards represent a highly-integrated, premium solution for conferencing applications.

The Soundweb London Telephone Hybrid Cards are designed to populate any of the four card slots on Soundweb London BLU-800, BLU-320, BLU-160 and BLU-120 devices. These cards enable Soundweb London devices to interface with a standard POTS (aka PSTN or Analog PBX) telephone network and feature line and parallel set connections. BSS Audio® BLU-100 Provides Upgraded Signal Processing To Soundweb™ London Series


BSS Audio®, a Harman International Company (NYSE-HAR), today added a cost-effective signal processor to its acclaimed Soundweb™ London family of digital signal processors. The new Soundweb London BLU-100 represents a premium, open-architecture solution in the form of a highly flexible, cost-effective and scalable package.

The BLU-100 offers a fixed configuration of 12 inputs and eight outputs, configurable signal processing, logic processing and a fault tolerant digital audio bus. The configurable signal processing capability offered by the BLU-100 is roughly twice that of the Soundweb London BLU-80 and BLU-16 devices.

The analog inputs of the BLU-100 provide software configurable gain in 6dB steps up to +48dB per channel and software selectable Phantom Power per channel. Phantom Power, Signal Present and Clip information per channel is easily accessible, without the requirement for a PC, from clear front panel LED indication.

The BLU-100 features a low latency, fault tolerant digital audio bus of 48 channels which uses standard Category 5e cabling giving a distance of 100m between compatible devices. Fiber media converters can be used to increase the distance between devices to over 10km (6.2 miles) using single mode fiber.

The BLU-100 is configured, controlled and monitored from HiQnet™ London Architect and is compatible with other members of the Soundweb London family. Its 48 channel digital audio bus represents channels 1-48 of the larger 256 channel digital audio bus when integrated with the BLU-800, BLU-320, BLU-160, BLU-120 and BLU-BOB devices. Up to 60 digital audio bus compatible devices can share channels on a single bus.

As with other Soundweb London devices, 12 Control Inputs and six Logic Outputs allow the BLU-100 to be integrated with GPIO compatible devices.

BSS Audio Provides Transparent Audio Through Swedish Glass Hotel Kosta Boda

In a unique installation that provides a comprehensive audio network, the Kosta Boda Hotel in Sweden has deployed a BSS Audio Soundweb London system for audio processing and distribution. Opened in June, the hotel is the first constructed entirely of glass and is located in the province of Småland, in the south of the country. The hotel also contains a spa, restaurants, a glass bar and a conference center. The system’s design was developed by Swedish Harman distributor Septon Electronics AB.

The Soundweb London system needed to distribute four sources of background music or sound effects into 21 zones throughout the building, cater for 10 conference rooms with local audio inputs and microphones, and finally be able to mute everything on command from a fire/evacuation system.

The signal distribution hub has been constructed around three technical rooms, including the master control room. A Soundweb London BLU-160 and multiple BLU-120 devices, with configurable I/O, are set in the main room, with a single BLU-120 device plus BLU-BOB in each of the other two. These are connected by the new BSS Audio digital audio bus, offering 256 channels of low-latency, fault-tolerant audio on a single Cat 6 Ethernet cable.

Jan Hedlund, manager at Septon Electronics said he was delighted that they had been able to notch up the spec. “Originally the Hotel didn’t have a lot of idea about sourcing products — a hi-fi solution really wouldn’t have worked with an installation of this complexity,” stated Hedlund. So a year ago he visited the site and sold the concept of Soundweb to the owners. And in June this year the audio network was commissioned.

On the ground floor, the Soundweb architecture has also been programmed with a separate gain structure for when the Glass Bar is used as an overspill area for the adjacent Conference Room. “It means we can leak out the sound from the conference mics through the bar’s ceiling speakers,” states Hedlund.

This is controlled from the local BLU-10 programmable touch screen remote — while the remaining two BLU-10 controllers reside at the dedicated ground floor and first floor Reception desks, and offer central control. Meanwhile, the seven BLU-3 remotes control local sources in the conference rooms and the pool area.

The system feeds out to multiples of JBL Control Contractor loudspeakers — from Control 29 loudspeakers in the Conference Room and the Glass Bar annex, where a live stage will be added, down to Control 26CT loudspeakers in the pool and bar areas (supplemented by Control 19CST 8” ceiling subs) and Control 24CT Micros in the corridors and peripheral areas.

Kosta Boda Art Hotel sales executive Anders Rickardsson, who is responsible for the equipment functionality, says this was one of many feats accomplished by the technical team. “They have managed to work within the sensitive design aesthetics by offering a discreet solution, at the same time providing clear, evenly-distributed and highly intelligible sound throughout the many different environments within the hotel. Operationally, the system presented us with flexibility and a number of different options,” stated Rickardsson.

Harman Professional Kicks Into High Gear At Swedish Soccer Stadium Norrköpings Idrottspark

In a fixed installation that provides a highly advanced and versatile sound reinforcement system, Swedish soccer stadium Idrottsparken has been retrofitted with a Harman system that includes components from BSS Audio, Crown, and JBL. Home to Sweden’s IFK Norrköping soccer club, the stadium was constructed in 1903 and underwent a major renovation beginning in 2007 that was just recently completed this year. The installation was completed by audio contractor Musikservice AB, with the system design developed by Swedish Harman distributor Septon Electronics AB.

Norrköpings Idrottspark Managing Director Magnus Nilsson explained the process of visiting other stadiums to help make a more educated decision on what type of audio system the stadium needed. “I didn’t want a conventional sound system. I was looking for something outstanding that would add a whole new dimension. Our goal was to offer our spectators a new way to experience the arena with a system that spreads the sound and atmosphere from the field and grandstand to all parts of the arena,” stated Nilsson.

To handle the processing and distribution, a BSS Audio Soundweb London digital matrix was constructed, consisting of 56 inputs and 64 outputs. This took into consideration the fact that, with the stadium’s renovation, the west side had received a new extension with a VIP section, the east side had doubled in size and a roof had been added to the north side. A site-wide fiber optic transmission was proposed to cover the longer distances involved.

While three I/O-configurable BLU-160 devices, a single BLU-320 and multiple BLU-120 devices three I/O-configurable BLU-160 devices, a BLU-320 and BLU-120 devices occupy the rack positions, a BLU-10 programmable remote situated in the commentator’s box offers local master control, and on match days overrides the source feeds to four simple BLU-8 zone controllers, strategically positioned in the bars and restaurants (while leaving the local volume control intact).

Project Consultant from the Sweden-based AV company MICAB, Mikael Bergvall felt the control of the Soundweb London system was a major advantage. “It’s just so easy to use. I can now access the system and adjust any parameter in the Soundweb London devices — from anywhere in the world over the Internet,” stated Bergvall.

Thirty Crown I-Tech 4000 amplifiers power the main audio system, while Crown CTs 1200 amplifiers, fitted with PIP Lite cards, power general areas of the stadium including restaurants. All amplifiers are networked via Harman HiQnet System Architect™.

JBL Control 47C/T loudspeakers were deployed in the first floor stadium restaurants. Incorporating JBL’s Radiation Boundary Integrator (RBI), which is adapted from the VerTec® series of line array loudspeakers. In the upper tier restaurant are a combination of seven JBL Control 29 and eight Control 28 loudspeakers, to take into account the increased roof height. For outdoor areas, 30 JBL weather-coated PD5322/95 and PD5322/64 were deployed.

“Every speaker had to be fitted and tested individually because of the variation of tolerances on the different roof sections,” stated Rickard Bergkvist, owner of Musikservice AB. The wider-dispersion horns run along the flat sides with the more directional PD5322/64’s providing coverage in the corners.

Norwegian Parliament Upgrades to BSS Audio Soundweb London

The Norwegian parliament in Oslo is using a large number of BSS Audio Soundweb devices for different applications, covering meeting rooms, hearing rooms and the main parliament assembly auditorium.

The plenary chamber recently saw a major upgrade to a Soundweb London system, relieving the older Soundweb Original system from its duties, which it has been performing since 2002.

The new system, installed during the Easter recess by Norwegian BSS Audio distributor, LydRommet AS, includes four BLU-320 break-in / out devices in an 8 x 8 configuration, and eight BLU-160 devices, all configured with four analog inputs, four digital outputs and eight analog outputs. Two BLU-10 touch screen remotes control the system locally, and the package includes a BLU-80 device located in the offices of the technical department for surveillance and monitoring of the entire system.

All 12 devices share the same control network and design file, but in terms of functionality there are two identical systems divided in separate Digital Audio Bus rings for full redundancy.

The matched configuration of the devices also serves as an additional back-up, enabling devices to be swapped easily if required.

The BLU-320 devices serve as microphone preamps and CobraNet™ interfaces, while all processing and distribution routing and management is taken care of by the BLU-160 devices. In addition to the sound reinforcement system in the auditorium there are more than 120 destinations including broadcast applications.

The new system replaces eight Soundweb sw9088iis devices and four high quality eight-channel microphone preamps. While the old system was utilizing close to 100% in DSP processing power, the new system is idling at around 20%.

In addition, the Soundweb London system introduces great improvement in signal-to-noise ratio, and the overall sound quality has been raised to a higher level.

SOUNDCRAFT Vi6’s KEEP iTUNES FESTIVAL RUNNING SMOOTHLY

The iTunes Festival relocated to The Roundhouse in North London this year, with over 60 artists playing live at this free event, which runs throughout July.

With bands ranging from Oasis, Kasabian, Franz Ferdinand and Snow Patrol at the commercial end to acoustic performers like Newton Faulkner, quirky performance artists with wide dynamic ranges (like Bat for Lashes’ Natasha Khan), leavened with some good old fashioned hard house and R&B it was important that the event’s experienced sound engineers, Dave Roden at FOH (here deployed as system tech) and Will King down at the stage had digital mixing environments on which incoming engineers could hit the ground running.

Last year, when the event was held at KOKO, iTunes production manager Stuart Turvill took advantage of a pair of Soundcraft Vi6’s, with the intuitive Studer Vistonics II™ interface, and it proved so popular he saw no reason to break from that tradition.

A 64-input Vi6 (with AES-EBU cards) was one of two digital surfaces offered at front-of-house, enabling incoming productions to simply plug in their show files, while down at the stage the compact surface — always a bonus within the confines of Monitor City — was configured 64-in/35-out.

Stuart Turvill was indeed fortunate to have his near neighbour from the Welsh valleys, Dave Roden working alongside — and despite their long relationship, the Stereophonics’ trusted sound man for the past 14 years was working the event for the first time. "Stuart has asked me on previous occasions but I have always been touring," says Roden. "But the band has only done one show this summer and is currently mixing an album in the studio, so I said I would love to do it."

Although being a relative newcomer to the Vi6, Dave Roden was able to turn teacher after the briefest of inductions on the board. "The only time I had seen it previously was when the Stereophonics played the iTunes Festival at the ICA two years ago," he admits. "I had never even touched one of these desks before, but within a couple of days I could show people how to use it!"

"The Vi6 is great, particularly for engineers who don’t have their own session file because it’s an easy desk to walk up to. I set up a basic template and engineers simply overlay their mix on that."

For those who have only previously worked in the analogue domain its straightforwardness is particularly reassuring. "Not only that, but it produces a nice sound and has great preamps. We have certainly had a lot of compliments."

Dave Roden said they opted for the 64-channel board knowing they would have a choice of two boards for main act and support. "This gives us 32 channels on Layer A, and another 32 on Layer B."

"I will simply label the channel and provide a couple of tap delays, reverbs and vocal thickener. However I leave the EQ and dynamics flat because if you dial in too much in advance it can becomes confusing — simple is better." However, he did say that the channel capacity was stretched when Snow Patrol appeared, supported by Silversun Pickups and Animal Kingdom. "That was a big channel requirement," he said. "But Snow Patrol only required a left and right feed from their control, so the Vi6 managed to cope admirably with the two support acts."

Will King agreed with his colleague’s assessment of the desk, though he admits he had to mix the first shows himself. "At the beginning I didn’t have a visiting engineer for four days — and in a way that was good because it kept me busy. It’s so easy to show sound engineers how to use the Vi6 — and I become pretty much redundant once the soundcheck starts."

For King the exercise is a repeat of 12 months ago, when he supervised all 31 days at KOKO on the resident Vi6 — briefly breaking away to work with one of his long-term artists, Stereo MC’s (the others being Darren Hayes and ex-Morcheeba singer Skye).

"I set up a basic template. I can have all the wedges and IEM’s patched onto the aux outputs at one time, and sound engineers come in and choose what they want. Everyone likes a desk that’s easy to operate and I try and make sure they don’t have to be flicking from page to page."

All the in-ears are on stereo pairs and Will King admits he likes to have his side fills on a dedicated stereo aux "which I realise is unconventional," he says. In summary he states, "The desk has been well designed for the monitor engineer and it’s easy to flip the faders. For engineers doing a one-off show such as this it’s absolutely perfect."

For Stuart Turvill the iTunes Festival production has notched up a gear — to a larger venue in which he has installed full choice of recording options — and LED 6mm side screens for the first time.

"You don’t get a lot of resistance from engineers when they see the Vi6," he concludes, adding that he has good reason to thank Soundcraft’s sister brand, BSS Audio, for the 144 channels of [MSR-604 II] splitters that are being used. "I can’t speak highly enough about the support we’ve had from Sound Technology (UK distributor for the Harman Pro brands)," he says.

BSS Audio™ Introduces AEC Input Card to the Soundweb™ London Family of Digital Signal Processors

BSS Audio™, a Harman International Company (NYSE-HAR), today introduced the Acoustic Echo Cancellation (AEC) card to its acclaimed Soundweb™ London family of digital signal processors. Designed specifically for the Soundweb London BLU-800, BLU-320, BLU-160 and BLU-120 devices, the Soundweb London AEC input card complements the analog and digital, input and output, card options, extending the reach of Soundweb London into teleconferencing applications.

The Soundweb London AEC input card utilizes a proprietary algorithm developed by Wavemakers®, a Harman International company and specialist in voice optimization software for automotive and communications applications. The algorithm used on the Soundweb London AEC input card has been specifically designed to meet the needs of Installed Sound applications and the high expectations of today’s teleconference participant.

The Soundweb London AEC input card features four microphone / line level channels with Acoustic Echo Cancellation per channel. A direct microphone feed is made available to facilitate local sound reinforcement. Configuration, control and monitoring of the AEC input card is provided by Harman HiQnet™ London Architect.

The Soundweb London BLU-800, BLU-320, BLU-160 and BLU-120 devices joined the existing BLU-80, BLU-32 and BLU-16 devices. The newer devices feature a low-latency, fault-tolerant digital audio bus of 256 channels. BSS Audio® Introduces Cost-Effective Break-Out Box To Soundweb™ London Family

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — BSS Audio®, a Harman International Company (NYSE-HAR), today added a cost-effective break-out box to its acclaimed Soundweb™ London family of digital signal processors. The new BLU-BOB output expander compliments the seven other members of the Soundweb London™ family and represents an inexpensive solution to increasing the number of outputs in a Harman HiQnet™ networked system.

The BLU-BOB features eight analog audio outputs on standard terminal block connectors and the 256-channel, low latency, fault tolerant digital audio bus, also found on the BLU-800, BLU-320, BLU-160 and BLU-120 devices. In addition to providing a backbone for the transportation of multiple channels, this bus also facilitates the creation of large, fault-tolerant, centralized matrices containing multiple devices. The digital audio bus uses standard, inexpensive Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable, which enables a distance of 100 meters between devices. The BSS Audio MC-1 fiber optic media converter can be used to increase the distance between devices to over 10km (6.2 miles) using single mode fiber.

A series of DIP switches on the rear of the BLU-BOB device allow consecutive channels, in groups of eight, to be selected from the digital audio bus. Multiple BLU-BOB devices can be configured to receive the same or different eight channel ranges. Signal present and power status are clearly displayed by front panel LED indicators for monitoring and troubleshooting. The BLU-BOB devices are powered by an external 24VDC power supply such as the BSS Audio 999-PSU.

Two chassis styles are available, the first (BLU-BOB1) is a half rack width, desk or wall mounted version and the second (BLU-BOB2) is a 19” single rack space version with mounting ears for equipment racks. Front panel indication and rear panel connections are identical on both versions.

BSS Audio at The Center Of Sound In Austria’s New Praterdome

In an impressive installation that is a display of ultimate fidelity and power, BSS Audio Soundweb™ London was utilized for the Praterdome, one of the largest and most modern nightclubs in Austria. The nightclub has two levels, four dance floors and 12 theme bars, with DJs playing music styles from various decades and styles including, house, techno, R&B, soul, 70s, 80s, and 90s. The system was installed by German based sound integrator FACE. The installation features signal processing and audio distribution by Soundweb London BLU-160 devices.

Opened in October 2008, Praterdome is owned by MPC (Music Park Concepts), which spent over seven million Euros in the development of the nightclub. “We needed a sound system that was going to effectively cover the entire venue. With people constantly moving all over the facility, the sound quality needed to be consistent,” stated Praterdome’s manager Thomas Zuchner.

Soundweb London features a low latency, fault tolerant digital audio bus of 256 channels which uses standard Category 5e cabling giving a distance of 100m between compatible devices. The BSS Audio MC-1 fiber optic media converter can be used to increase the distance between devices to over 10km (6.2 miles) using single mode fiber.

Additionally, JBL speakers were installed throughout the club. This includes 41 JBL SRX 728s, 18 JBL SRX 728s, and 16 JBL SRX 715s. Forty JBL Control 26Cs were incorporated as well. Additional Harman products in the installation include multiple Crown XTi 1000 amplifiers and CT3000 amplifiers. A total of 130 speakers and subwoofers create a sound system with a capacity of 100,000 watts.

Audio Inc. Finds Perfect Application for BSS Audio Soundweb London at Bermuda Music Festival

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — Roselle Park, NJ based sound company Audio Inc. utilized BSS Audio Soundweb London to help run live sound reinforcement at the Bermuda Music Festival, a unique multi-day live concert event held in October, featuring artists such as Beyonce, Alicia Keys, and UB40.

Mike Sinclair, Vice President of Audio Inc. only learned of how useful Soundweb London could be to him at the InfoComm 2008 show. “We were looking for a return snake for large sound systems, and it was suggested by Geoff Lissman of Harman that we consider Soundweb London.”

Soundweb London features a low-latency and a fault-tolerant digital audio bus of 256 channels. In addition to providing a backbone for the transportation of multiple channels, this bus also facilitates the creation of large, fault-tolerant, centralized matrices containing multiple devices. The digital audio bus uses standard, inexpensive Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable, which enables a distance of 100 meters between devices; fiber media converters and fiber can be utilized to increase this distance in excess of 40km.

“We used Soundweb London devices to do all the processing,” stated Sinclair. “We can get 256 channels to the stage and I have complete control and confidence in how they run. BSS Audio gave us the flexibility to have three or four consoles live and plugged in all the time. Soundweb London became the system matrix. Everyone had their own EQs and no master board was needed.” This allowed Audio Inc. the ability to perform a line check on one console and a sound check on another without ever tying one up. “Due to the fact that we are dealing with so many different acts with different equipment needs, this type of flexibility was essential.”

Sinclair also expressed how highly regarded the BSS Audio name is within the professional sound industry. “Just the BSS Audio name alone was enough to instill confidence in the sound engineers at the music festival. Because it was a BSS Audio product, it was immediately accepted by all engineers that were there,” stated Sinclair.

4X Audio Powers Sound System at New TRE Nightclub in Sacramento with BSS Audio

In an ambitious and successful project to provide the optimal audio system, 4X Audio has looked to BSS Audio to provide ultimate control and ease of use for its recently developed sound system at the new TRE Nightclub, in Sacramento California. TRE is a brand new upscale nightclub that also includes a full restaurant and lounge.

For the project, 4X Audio utilized both BSS Audio Soundweb London BLU-80 processors and sw9012 remote source/preset selectors. “We utilize the BLU-80s constantly because of their input and output flexibility, as well as their reliable functionality, programming and rock solid networked audio,” stated 4X Audio sound integrator Doug Pumphrey. “The client wanted to create something larger and of higher quality than anything that had ever been installed in a Northern California nightclub.” The Soundweb London BLU-80 offers configurable I/O, configurable signal processing and CobraNet audio and has open architecture which is fully configurable through HiQnet™ London Architect.

Additionally, JBL speakers were used throughout the restaurant, bar and patio area. This includes 35 JBL Control 226CT ceiling speakers, 16 JBL Control 19CS ceiling subwoofers and eight JBL Control 28A/V surface mounted speakers. Installed in the main dance room and DJ area were eight JBL VP7212/64DPAN powered high output loudspeakers, eight VPSB7118DPAN powered high output 18’’ subwoofers, and two JBL PRX512M self-powered monitor speakers. “The main challenge for this project was creating smooth coverage of the audio system throughout the restaurant and lounge areas, while simultaneously providing smooth and high energy coverage for the dance floor, which is located in the center of the venue,” said Carl Sagen, lead installation technician at 4X Audio.

Additional Harman products used in the installation included multiple Crown XTi 1000 and XTi 2000 amplifiers that powered the speakers in the restaurant, bar and patio areas of the building.

BSS Audio™ Introduces Four New Soundweb™ London Family Members

The BLU-800 and BLU-160 models feature configurable DSP, boasting four times the processing capability of exiting Soundweb London DSP devices. RG Jones Sound Engineering Expands Wimbledon’s BSS Audio Soundweb Network For This Year’s Championships

RG Jones Sound Engineering Expands Wimbledon’s BSS Audio Soundweb Digital Network For This year’s Championships With First Soundweb London New Family Members Installation.

The All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club will once again look to the excellence of Royal Warrant Holders RG Jones to revamp the audio network at the home of the world-famous Wimbledon Tennis Championships. A major upgrade this year featuring configurable DSP and a 256-channel, low latency, fault tolerable digital audio bus, will coincide with the release of BSS Audio’s newest members to the Soundweb London Family.

Prior to the 2002 Wimbledon Championships, RG Jones oversaw one of the largest deployments ever of BSS Audio’s Soundweb Original ‘Green’ series. In fact, Soundweb’s broadcast quality audio gave the BBC the confidence for the first time to use the media wall box feeds from RG Jones to supply many of the feeds required for The Championships. At the same time the BBC also chose to install a Soundweb in each of the No.1 Court and Centre Court scanner trucks, while further devices were installed in OSCAR, the audio and video distribution area where the BBC routes all the Court feeds to the international broadcasters.

But the standard of signal quality, routing flexibility and processing power which so impressed the BBC six years ago has moved on considerably — and the timing of a further major upgrade this year (largely focused on the Centre Court redevelopment) coincided with the release of BSS Audio’s newest members to the Soundweb London family. These feature configurable DSP boasting four times the processing capability of existing Soundweb London devices and a 256-channel, low-latency, fault-tolerant digital audio bus, which works on Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable and allows an audio link between ‘BLU’ devices over distances of up to 100 meters, with the option of exceeding that distance via an off the shelf fiber media converter. The combination of the digital audio bus and increased DSP capability allows 128 x 128 matrices within individual devices and 128 x n matrices within a system.

RG Jones’ Sales & Installation Dept Manager, Jon Berry, felt that this would provide the perfect solution. “The limitations with the old system were the amount of networked audio channels you could get, and since we have expanded the system every year — including a new PA system for the new Court 2 and now the Centre Court redevelopment — we needed to increase the routing,” he said. “And this would have required nearly 20 extra [Soundweb Original] hubs.”
So back in March this year Harman Pro UK introduced RG Jones to the new Soundweb London devices, offering programming, installation and maintenance support.

“We could see the benefits immediately,” continued RG Jones’ project manager. “The whole benefit resided in the BLU link, which gave us 256 channels of networked audio. The two, more powerful, SHARC DSPs provide four times the processing power enabling us to create lots of matrices of the signal without any risk of running out of processing capacity.”

The biggest drawback was the time scale, as his team was simultaneously installing over 500 speakers and amp sources into the new look Centre Court. They still ensured that the new Soundweb system was fully soak tested over a two-week period at their HQ, prior to delivery.

“Due to the cable length restriction of the BLU link, we have interfaced some of the Soundweb Original ‘Green’ boxes with the Soundweb London ‘BLU’ system as a multicore system using AES-EBU connections” continued Jon. “These units are placed across the site to access the various buildings that are spread further apart than the 100m limit, such as the Big Screen control hut, the Bandstand, and the scanner park. We have used a number of the Club’s infrastructure fiber pairs between the PA rooms to create a redundant ring using the BLU link.”

So how is the system designed? The matrix has been developed around three BLU-800 devices and 27 x BLU-160 devices. Mission control for the system is located in the Broadcast Centre PA room where the team monitors and controls the system on an intuitive HiQnet™ London Architect GUI developed largely by Duncan Owen, who worked on the 2002 refit, displayed on four large LCD displays. A mirrored control system is installed in the second ‘bunker’ – the Centre Court PA room.

Each of the three PA rooms has a selection of processing racks housing the Soundweb London devices, and the original SW9088iis processors and SW9000iis hubs. The Soundwebs also interface to a Debentures function system, and press distribution system installed by RG Jones.

One of the main roles of Soundweb London is to transmit site-wide announcements via the paging mics (there is no automated messaging). “Although the system does not fall under a full PA/VA system remit, the expectation is that it may well become necessary at some point.” The other key tasks for the Soundweb London system are virtual mixing of the umpire microphones on the local court audio systems, links with the broadcasters and distribution to the Press.
Meanwhile the second phase of The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club’s three-year plan to transform the Centre Court remains on schedule.

After going roofless in 2007, Centre Court has assumed a more traditional look following the installation of the permanent non-moveable new roof. The seating capacity will increase by 1200 to 15,000 from 13,800, while the East and North stands have been fitted out with new leisure facilities.
The final phase of the Centre Court project, including the installation of a retractable roof, will complete next year when the new No.2 Court will also come into use.

“It’s been a very successful integration,” summarises RG Jones’ project manager. “ Our original aim had been simply to replicate the role of the Soundweb Original ‘Greens’ with the new Soundweb London ‘BLUs’ — but because it’s a much more powerful set-up we’ve improved on it considerably. There’s now a lot we can look at in terms of both fault monitoring and scheduling — specifically to check the health of the Soundweb network and later the amplifiers.

“We have also implemented a CobraNet-based comms system with some Soundweb network integration for ‘Hawk-eye’, the Big Screen and internal crew communication. We use the Soundweb system to put the delayed audio in Sync with the picture on the new active scoreboards.”

The final word comes from Duncan Owen. “With Soundweb London we have a much glossier control surface programmed with HiQnet London Architect; from a design point of view it is a lot faster than Soundweb Designer and there’s a lot more you can do with it. Also, a lot of thought has gone into the GUI — you can customise just about everything. After all it is an extensive site which we are covering with this network.”

JBL Professional Loudspeakers Power Beijing Olympics Fencing Hall, Soon To Be The National Convention Center

Demonstrating the wide variety and interoperability of JBL loudspeakers in one of the world’s largest showcases, the Fencing Hall at the National Convention Center in Beijing recently hosted the fencing and modern pentathlon events at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. This brand new space, located on the Olympic Green, was built specifically for the Olympics.

The Fencing Hall features 14 fencing strips, a warm-up room, stands for thousands of fans, a television broadcasting room, and lounge and shower facilities. With the conclusion of the games, the hall will now be converted to a convention hall. There are also numerous features aimed at lowering the environmental impact of the hall including an increase in energy savings and water conservation.

The audio system is nothing less than the state of the art, and truly showcases the breadth JBL’s lineup of world-class, industry-leading loudspeakers. The main PA system features six VERTEC® line arrays, each containing six VT4888DP midsize powered line array elements and two VT4882DP powered arrayable subwoofers. The system also includes 400 Control24CT and 300 Control26CT ceiling speakers, along with 130 Control 300 series large-format ceiling speakers. Further bolstering the system are 92 SRX712M stage monitors, 10 VRX915M stage monitors, along with 20 EON15P portable loudspeakers. Additionally, the system includes eight AM4215/64, eight AM4215/95, eight AM6215/64 and four AM6315/64 loudspeakers. Not to be overlooked are eight PD5322/64, two PD5212/64 and three PD5322/43 loudspeakers. The entire audio system will remain intact during the conversion of the hall, although the system can be reconfigured to suit different events.

BSS Audio Soundweb Leads the Pack at Cycling Velodrome For The Beijing 2008 Summer Games

Few sports test an Olympic athlete the same way that cycling does. It requires maximum strength and endurance for the cyclist to perform at the highest level. At the Beijing 2008 Summer Games, cyclists are competing in the brand-new Laoshan Velodrome, whose sound system is only matched in excellence by the Olympians themselves.

Laoshan Velodrome, which will host all cycling during the Olympics, has a capacity of 6,000 spectators. It features a 250-meter oval shaped track and a total surface of 32,920 square meters. Harman HiQnet no longer requires the user to manage multiple disparate operating systems or be responsible for programming individual signal processors, speaker controllers, wireless microphone systems, and mixing consoles. HiQnet was developed by engineers from across the Harman Pro Group and is coordinated by the System Development and Integration Group (SDIG), a team of dedicated systems specialists based in Salt Lake City, Utah.
