Soundcraft has taken the already successful MPM and MFX Series of mixers and given them both hardware and audio performance upgrades.
The new Soundcraft mixers, known as the MFXi and MPMi Series (emphasizing the high input count on each), build on the strength of the original range by using vertically mounted PCBs with the control pots being nutted to the front panel. This not only increases the rigidity of the mixer and gives a firm operating feel, but also aids servicing should it ever be required. As part of this review, all aspects of new the layouts were reviewed taking into account customer feedback over the past 18 months and this has yielded many other subtle but significant improvements to the layout, graphics and operation when compared to the original consoles
The MFXi has integral Lexicon effects, something that only Soundcraft are able to offer. Using the same AudioDNA® processor featured in many of the Digitech® and Lexicon® outboard products including the highly respected Lexicon MX400, which provides the finest quality effects ever found in a console at this price level. The mixers boast 32 effects presets, a user settings store function, 3 parameter controls and a tap tempo mode. These effects have been optimized for integration within the console to provide the lowest noise floor and to deliver the best sound.
Both the MFXi and MPMi provide two group busses, three aux sends, (two auxes and one FX send on the MFXi model) and two stereo input channels. The MPMi is available with 12 or 20 mic inputs, giving a maximum mix input capacity of 18 or 26 inputs, while the MFXi is offered in 3 frame-sizes with 8, 12 or 20 mic inputs, these having a mix capacity of 16, 20 or 28 inputs..
Soundcraft has taken the hardware development opportunity to fine-tune the audio design and to further enhance the audio performance of the mixers, further improving key specifications including noise and distortion performance.
What is unique about both new models, and a feature that will be appreciated by many, is the provision of a slot on the chassis which accepts a standard Kensington® laptop computer cable lock, meaning that your mixer can be secured in a venue, installation or retail display.

Soundcraft Upgrades Successful Lexicon-Equipped Mixers
Soundcraft, Studer And Optocore Partner For Control Of Optocore Mic Preamps Over Network
Initially announced at last year’s Pro Light & Sound, the partnership between Soundcraft, Studer and Optocore is bearing rich fruit as the companies develop further features for the interface between Soundcraft and Studer consoles and the Optocore fibre network. Last year, Optocore and Soundcraft Studer co-developed the DD2FE network MADI interface that allowed Studer Vista and Soundcraft Vi Series consoles to transmit up to 128 input and 128 output channels of audio over an Optocore network.
The teams have now announced that using the Optocore DD2FE, Soundcraft Vi Series consoles and Studer Vista consoles are now able to remotely control the microphone preamplifiers in the Optocore LX4AP stagebox, which features 48 mic inputs. This has been enabled through Optocore’s integration of the Studer D21m I/O system control protocol into their topology. Vi Series and Vista consoles can already remotely control the preamps in their own stageboxes over the network, allowing multiple consoles and stageboxes to be interconnected with full redundancy.
The ability to remotely control stagebox gains over the Optocore fibre network is a major advantage for users, giving that extra degree of flexibility and gain control over the relevant parts of an installed system, particularly in Theatres.

More option interface cards for the Soundcraft Vi Series Digital Live Sound consoles have been released, expanding the applications of the highly popular digital mixer into Broadcast, and adding easy capabilities for direct recording from the desk.
Using the ADAT card, it is possible to connect 2 ports of 8 channels (inputs and outputs) to an ADAT-equipped hard disk or software-based recorder, so 2 cards would enable 32 channels of audio to be recorded and played back almost instantaneously.

Studer Vista Console 5 Gains AutoTouchPlus Dynamic Automation
AutoTouchPlus, the renowned dynamic automation system that is part of the Studer Vista 7 and Vista 8 consoles, is now also available on the Studer Vista 5.
The recent upgrade means that the Vista 5, which is primarily a live production console, can now also be used for post production work, for example between live sessions.
All parameters of the console can be automated against timecode, in the most simple and intuitive way, using touch sensitive faders and Vistonics™ encoders.
The Vistonics screens elegantly display the current mix pass values along with the previously written mix data from the last mix pass, providing an informative overview provided by no other console on the market.
The existing MIDI port is used to read MTC (MIDI Timecode) to which the automation is then slaved. For systems based on linear SMPTE timecode (LTC), an optional LTC to MTC converter is available.
The main control panel for AutoTouchPlus, the virtual ACU (automation control unit) is displayed as a window on the Graphical Controller, and in addition, the most important buttons from this panel are provided on the desk surface as well.
Existing Vista 5 installations can be upgraded to this functionality from software version 4.2 onwards.

Soundcraft Showcases Lower-Priced Si2 Addition To Si Series Digital Console Family
Digital consoles seem to be freely flowing from the Soundcraft Studer team these days, as a new member of the Si Series is announced. The Soundcraft Si2 is a smaller partner to the Si3 launched only in September last year, and is bound to appeal to those wanting a compact and highly-featured digital console at a competitive price.
The Si2 comes in a smaller footprint than its bigger brother, and has 48 mic inputs mapped on 24 faders (the Si3 has 64 inputs), but this is where the differences end. The Si2, like the Si3, has four dedicated Stereo Line channels, four dedicated FX Returns from the four stereo Lexicon FX processors, 8 balanced insert sends and 8 balanced insert returns. Si2 is complete with 24 Group/Aux busses available at all times, 8 matrix busses and a full complement of monitor talkback and main bus outputs. One of the most unique and compelling features of the Si series is that every input and output has its own dedicated input (output) socket on the back of the console.
Like the Si3, the Si2 uses a combination of rotary encoders and OLED screens on every channel so the engineer mixes at source, without recourse to a central screen, an interface welcomed by many engineers since the console’s launch last year. Four assignable on-board lexicon effect engines supplement 4 stereo inputs to provide a really powerful mix package in a width of 1.4m for a UK list price of £17,950.
This package will be highly suited for installations where a smaller footprint is critical, such as theaters, houses of worship and smaller tour sound systems.
With all input and output connections and power supply on board, the Si2 can simply drop in where an existing analog console sits, utilizing existing copper cable snakes and splitter systems.

AKG Expands Industry-Leading WMS 4500 Capabilities With The Addition Of Two New Frequency Bands
Today at Musikmesse, AKG announced the addition of two new frequency bands to the WMS 4500 wireless system capabilities with the introduction of Band 7 and Band 8. The recent expansion to the WMS 4500 frequency range now allows users to operate on two additional user channels and multi-channel applications in today’s crowded RF environment.
The two new frequency bands, Band 7 (500-530 MHz) and Band 8 (570-600 MHz), support the WMS 4500 system’s components; the SR4500 receiver unit, the PT4500 emitter and the HT4500 handheld microphone unit.

JBL Builds On Success Of PRX Series With PRX512Mi and PRX718S Powered, Portable Loudspeakers
Bringing a new level of versatility and performance to its groundbreaking PRX Series powered, portable loudspeakers, JBL today introduced the PRX512Mi multipurpose powered loudspeaker and the PRX718S high performance powered subwoofer. These additions bring the total number of models in the PRX Series to seven and provide performing musicians, DJs and sound companies with more power and flexibility than ever before.
The PRX512Mi is a 12-inch, 2-way, truly multipurpose, self-powered sound reinforcement system, with a frequency range of 46 Hz to 20 kHz. The PRX512Mi is comprised of a 12-inch Differential Drive® woofer, a neodymium compression driver mounted to a 70 x 70-degree horn, all driven by a multichannel Crown International Class-D digital power amplifier. The PRX512Mi features 400-watt low-frequency and 100-watt high-frequency amp channels, while weighing only 18 kilos (40 pounds).
At the core of the PRX512Mi is a fully integrated DSP input section, providing mic/line level input, selectable system EQ, and a premium A/D converter for a maximum signal-to-noise ratio. The multipurpose enclosure makes the PRX512Mi ideal as a main PA or stage monitor, while a dual socket pole mount, eight standard M10 suspension points and one M10 pull-back point enables a new level of multi-functionality.

Also new to the PRX family, the PRX718S is an 18-inch, self-powered subwoofer system, offering a frequency range of 33 Hz to 160 Hz, and a power rating of 1,400 watts peak. In addition to the 18-inch Differential Drive woofer, the PRX718S features JBL’s proprietary Dual-Bridge Technology™ (DBT), which directly links discrete amplifier channel outputs with each voice coil in the woofer, transferring the maximum amount of power in the most efficient way and improving the speaker’s overall performance. The PRX718S also offers a DSP input section for precise bandwidth control and limiting. Additional functionality includes a selectable high-pass filter on the stereo loop-through outputs and polarity reversal, all at a weight of 36 kilos (80 pounds), very light compared to competitive subwoofers at this price and power.

JBL Professional Announces Availability Of Bags, Covers and Cases For Its Portable PA Loudspeakers
In a move designed to make its industry-leading portable loudspeakers even easier to transport and protect, JBL has teamed with Gator Cases to develop a line of bags, covers and cases specifically designed for JBL portable PA speakers, including the EON, PRX, and SRX Series.
Gator will exclusively sell this new line of bags, covers and cases to JBL U.S. dealers, and to JBL distributors around the world. The line currently entails more than 25 innovative, easily portable models, including form-fitted bags for the new-generation EON speakers.

Harman Professional To Demonstrate Preview of End-To-End Ethernet AV At Pro Light & Sound
Harman SDIG Vice President, Rick Kreifeldt, will also present a paper on developments by the IEEE 802.1 Bridging Task Group on delivering uninterrupted audio and video over standards-based Ethernet.
Bringing to fruition over three years of research and development as well as comprehensive participation and leadership in the IEEE AVB 802.1 Audio/Video Bridging (AVB) Task Group initiative, Harman Professional today announced it will demonstrate Harman HiQnet™ products streaming Ethernet AV in a technology preview at Pro Light & Sound in Frankfurt, Germany on April 1, 2009. The company will showcase several new Ethernet AV products including a dbx SC 32 Digital Matrix Processor, and a Crown CTs amplifier all connected with an Ethernet AV switch at Stand G42 in Hall 8. An Ethernet AV architectural wall-plate from BSS Audio will also be on display.
The demonstration follows Harman’s participation in the IEEE 802.1 AVB workshop with AVB Task Group co-members at the 125th AES Convention in San Francisco. The IEEE 802 working groups, a coalition of leading technology companies from professional audio and video, semiconductor, networking, computing and consumer electronics have been working on protocols that allow the building of standards-based networks with the appropriate quality of service for high quality audio performance and production. This new set of standards, developed by the IEEE 802.1 (AVB) Task Group, provides three major enhancements for 802-based networks:
• Precise timing to support low-jitter media clocks and accurate synchronization of multiple streams
• A simple reservation protocol that allows endpoint devices to reserve the bandwidth in a path to guarantee quality of service for audio/video streams
• Queuing and forwarding rules that ensure that audio/video streams will pass through the network within the delay specified by the reservation
The enhancements enabled by IEEE 802.1 standards require no changes to the Ethernet lower layers and are compatible with all the other functions of a standard Ethernet switch. As a result, the entire Ethernet ecosystem is available to developers—in particular, the various high speed physical layers (up to 100 gigabit/sec in current standards), security features (encryption and authorization), and advanced management (remote testing and configuration) features.
