LAS VEGAS, Nevada– Featuring design sophistication on par with the most progressive clubs anywhere in the world, Lava, the new nightclub at Turning Stone Resort and Casino in Verona, NY, boasts a world-class sound system with Harman Pro Group components from AKG, BSS, Crown Audio, JBL Professional and Soundcraft, all configured and controlled via Harman HiQnet™.

Lava was designed by The Princeton Companies architects with entertainment production design by Production Technology Consultants Group, Inc. (PTC Group). For the acoustic and system design, Nathan Powell, President of PTC Group compiled a veritable dream team of club design including design veterans Steve Dash and George “Strop” Stavropoulos of Integral Sound of Philadelphia, PA and integration experts Brown Sound of Syracuse, NY, led by company president Jim Messinger. PTC worked with Dean Danowitz, president of Starlite Productions, on the lighting system design.

Built around a 12,000-sq-ft dance floor, the 24,000-sq-ft “super club” features two tiers of balcony-levels and a visually stunning 60-foot waterfall that together presented Powell, Dash, Messinger and their teams with no small challenge in sound design.

Lee Fleishman, director of operations for PTC Group, based in Collegeville, PA, worked directly with Nathan Powell on the production design. “On the main dance floor we employed JBL’s PD series cabinets,” Fleishman noted. “It was a real challenge, aesthetically, placing the lighting with the speakers around the dance floor for even coverage.”

Together, PTC and Starlite produced a successful production ring around the dance floor that includes multiple clusters of JBL’s PD5322 loudspeakers with a PD5122 loudspeaker attached to each cluster. Custom JBL CS-ASB6128-HR subwoofers surround the dance floor as well. These subwoofers utilize JBL’s new 2269H driver. The new 18-inch driver has an ultra-long excursion transducer with 8,000 watts of power handling capacity for high output. “The amount of low-end created on this dance floor is incredible,” said Fleishman. The entire dance system is powered by Crown I-Tech series amplifiers.

Steve Dash and George Stavropoulos of Integral Sound verified the dance sound system design and performed the initial dance system tuning. “Nathan Powell gave us the details of the intended system. It was well thought-out and professional,” said Dash. “We suggested some minor changes and Powell made them on the spot. The club did not have furniture or acoustic treatments installed and the system still sounded great. I would put this system up against any of our systems in Miami and/or New York.”


Crown CTs-powered JBL MS28-HR loudspeakers serve the balcony areas and also the bars and private VIP booths in the under-balcony area. JBL Control 29AV-1 speakers cover the outdoor valet and other covered areas; JBL Control 25AVs cover auxiliary areas such as the lobby, indoor valet areas, and outdoor cabanas while Control 26CT ceiling speakers cover the restrooms. In the outdoor areas, the separate cabanas each have their own volume control. Lava features AKG wireless microphone systems and a Soundcraft Spirit FX16 mixer for sub-mixing other outside inputs. The system is networked via Harman’s HiQnet.

“Using the HiQnet System Architect™, we are able to go through the casino network and access our programming systems from any Internet connection,” said Fleishman. “We can manage the system and receive error notifications remotely and immediately.”

Installing this system from the pre-engineered drawings was Brown Sound Equipment Corporation out of Syracuse, NY. “Jim Messinger and his staff were key to this installation and did an excellent job,” said Powell. “Since Brown Sound is based nearby in Syracuse, this will allow the customer’s future needs and/or problems to be answered in a very timely manner.”
