NORTHRIDGE, California –- Continuing its support of excellence and creative innovation among young filmmakers, Harman Professional will once again provide cutting-edge audio technology for this season’s Sundance Institute Labs Feature Film Program that takes place from June through September at the Sundance Institute in Provo, Utah. This year — the program’s 12th season — Harman Professional will provide seven pairs of JBL LSR2300 monitors, three Soundcraft M12 mixers and three Soundcraft M8 mixers for use in the program’s film editing and scoring projects. HP Marketing, of Centennial, Colorado, the Harman Professional regional manufacturer’s representative and a long-time supporter of Sundance, facilitated the equipment’s delivery to Sundance.
Reservoir Dogs, Boys Don’t Cry, Requiem For A Dream. These are just a few of the now-classic movies that had their starts at the Sundance Institute Labs Feature Film Program, which every year nurtures a select group of aspiring filmmakers in a workshop environment where they are mentored by some of the best minds on the film industry. The Feature Film Program, which also includes the Film Composers Lab in which young music scoring talent is cultivated, takes place in the hills of Utah, far from the high-tech sound stages of Hollywood. However, thanks to Harman Professional’s commitment to the advancement of film sound, the work at Sundance Institute Labs Feature Film Program benefits from the same technology platforms these students will be using when they begin their careers in Hollywood. The JBL LSR2300 Series Studio Monitors features the same stringent Linear Spatial Reference criteria used in the design of the acclaimed LSR6300 and LSR4300 Series for absolute accuracy at the mix position in any environment. The Soundcraft M Series mixers deliver a great-sounding, reliable performance in any environment, offering a familiar user interface with advanced design and construction, including high-quality 100mm faders combined with signal and peak LEDs on every channel and high resolution output metering.

Scott Johnson, Technical Director for the Sundance Institute Film Composers Lab Program, notes that the JBL and Soundcraft equipment are used throughout the summer, for all the editing work and for the Film Composers Labs working first on documentaries and then on narrative features later in the summer. Now in his 11th year with the program, Johnson says JBL and Soundcraft have been an integral part of the initiative for as long as he can remember. “The equipment is great – it really helps raise the technical and creative bar at the Labs,” he says. “Working with this kind of quality equipment in this remote environment gives the students an incredible advantage, one that I’m sure will stay with them for the rest of their careers.”

Le Mobile Recording Studio Captures Coachella With JBL LSR2300 Studio Monitors
During the Festival’s three days, the Mojave Stage hosted performances by 30 acts, including Devo, Grizzly Bear, Imogen Heap, Julian Casablancas, Shooter Jennings and Les Claypool. In other words, rest was not an option for Charbonneau. “When you’re mixing live from 10 AM to 1 AM for three days, it’s a tough gig for the ears,” Charbonneau said, “but it’s such a great time doing it, especially when you love music and you love what you do.”
Not only does the schedule itself pose a challenge, but Charbonneau notes that mixing live music for broadcast leaves little room for error. “With live broadcasts and recording live music, you always have to be on top of everything, because you only have one chance to get it right,” he said. “When you work in an environment like that you never know what you’re up against, so it’s very important to be comfortable with your monitors.”
To that end, Charbonneau selected a stereo pair of JBL LSR2328 studio monitors as part of his setup at Coachella, having first used them when recording the Andrea Bocelli and David Foster “My Christmas” concert at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles, which aired on PBS television on November 26.
“I couldn’t believe how good they sound while being so affordable,” Charbonneau said. “I figured Coachella would be the ultimate test for the LSR2300’s. It’s non-stop operation in a loud environment. “When recording or mixing live in such a challenging environment, you can easily be thrown off by so many elements. Having monitors you know well and that you can rely on sonically, surely is one of the most important things.”
According to Charbonneau, the LSR2328 monitors passed the test with flying colors. “I was very pleased with the results,” Charbonneau said. “It has lots of power, a very nice low end, clarity and ultimately, it’s really proven to be a workhorse.”

JBL LSR Series Monitors Bring Latin GRAMMY Awards Telecast To Life On The Univision Network
Schilling first became familiar with the LSR4328P and LSR4312SP monitors on another Univision music project in South Florida earlier this year, where they were installed in the remote audio truck. “I’m familiar with the JBL sound but this was a kind of new product for me,” said Schilling, who is acclaimed for his work with artists from Cachao and Babyface to Shakira and Madonna, and the recipient of four GRAMMYs and 10 Latin GRAMMYs, in addition to two EMMY Awards. “I worked with the LSR4300 Series studio monitors over the course of 10 weeks on that project and was impressed by their sound, their adaptability and their smooth linear response.” Schilling was so impressed he specified them for his station in the Remote Recording broadcast truck at the Latin GRAMMYs, and the LSR4300 Series monitors did not disappoint. “Latin music is very dense, with many components and tons of percussion and big horn sections – we had as many as 30 players on stage at one time – and there’s a lot to sort out,” Schilling explains. “The LSR monitors have tremendous definition, which is exactly what you need for a complex broadcast mix like this. There is no ear fatigue, and their linear response meant that I knew what to expect at any volume level. They’re simple and straightforward to use and highly adaptable in any environment. For all those reasons, I plan on using them in the future.”
The JBL LSR4300 Series are the first professional studio monitors with computer connectivity, digital inputs, networking, and JBL technologies that allow accurate mixes even in acoustically challenging workspaces. The LSR4328P is engineered using JBL's Linear Spatial Reference design criteria that optimize frequency response and imaging at the mix position. JBL's RMC™ Room Mode Correction system incorporates a powerful analyzer into each speaker that analyzes and automatically compensates for problems caused by problematic low frequency standing waves. Speaker tuning is simply accomplished with the push of a button using the supplied calibration microphone. The result is a calibrated listening environment in which the monitors work in harmony with the room, enabling mixes that translate reliably to the outside world. The LSR4312SP 12" Powered Subwoofer extends the low frequency response of the system into the 20Hz region and is networked with the main speakers for centralized control and tuning of the entire system.
The live sound component of the event featured JBL VERTEC® line arrays, along with products from fellow Harman Professional companies, including dbx 226 compressor/limiters and an AKG IVM4 wireless in-ear monitoring system. The main PA system, provided and manned by ATK Audiotek, included a total of 63 VERTEC® VT4889 full-size line array loudspeakers, with the main system featuring 22 on each side of the stage and three more attached to the bottom of eight VT4880 full-size arrayable subwoofers that made up the center cluster. Six VRX932 compact line array cabinets were used as front fills. Two rear delay clusters were comprised of eight VT4889 line array elements each.

New JBL LSR2300 Series Studio Monitors Deliver Professional Performance at Entry-Level Price Points
At Winter NAMM 2009, JBL Professional is introducing the new LSR2300 Series Studio Monitor System, delivering professional performance at price points within reach of any studio. The LSR2300 Series addresses the demand for cost-effective, high-performance monitoring systems, driven by the proliferation of affordable, computer-based production systems.
The LSR2300 Series includes: the LSR2328P Bi-Amplified 8-inch Studio Monitor with 160 Watts of amplification; the LSR2325P Bi-Amplified 5-inch Studio Monitor with 85 Watts of amplification; and the LSR2310SP Powered 10-inch Studio Subwoofer with an integrated 180 Watt power amplifier.
In developing the LSR2300 Series, JBL applied the same stringent Linear Spatial Reference criteria used in the design of the acclaimed LSR6300 and LSR4300 Series. While most manufacturers take only a single on-axis measurement of the speaker’s performance, JBL’s Linear Spatial Reference criteria requires 70 measurements, yielding more than 1,200 times more data. The data enables JBL to engineer a system that produces greater accuracy at the mix position. A trademark of LSR2300 design is the large waveguide and the elliptical tweeter aperture that work in conjunction with a 1” silk-substrate high-frequency transducer to deliver superior imaging and smoother frequency response.
Today’s music styles, film production and the demand for high-quality audio for HDTV require a monitor system capable of extended low frequency performance and high dynamic range. To address this, JBL engineered new long-excursion low-frequency transducers with high-flux motors and a custom tuned port that work in concert to produce deep accurate low frequency response, previously unavailable at this price point. The LSR2328P 8” model provides low frequency extension to 37Hz; the LSR2325P 5” model to 43Hz, and the LSR2310SP subwoofer provides deep low frequency performance below 29Hz.
Additionally, each model in the LSR2300 line produces exceptional sound pressure level (SPL) achieved through the use of high-sensitivity transducers and careful attention paid to the thermal properties of the system. Since heat is the enemy of output, the low frequency port doubles as a means of cooling the amplifier output devices. The LSR2328P bi-amplified 8-inch 2-way monitor for example, includes 160 Watts of amplification and is capable of a maximum peak SPL of 117 dB. All three LSR2300 models survived the torturous JBL power test in which the system is required to play at full rated output for 100 hours before becoming a production-ready design.
Featured to integrate into professional systems, all models include balanced XLR, ¼-inch, and unbalanced RCA inputs that allow connection to a wide range of playback sources including computer audio workstations, professional mixing consoles, as well as consumer playback systems. The LSR2310SP Subwoofer includes a 2-channel bass management system with selectable crossover settings and balanced outputs for integration of the sub into any system. LSR2325P and LSR2328P enclosures include mounting points and are reinforced for safe wall mounting. Transducers in all models are self-shielded to allow use in close proximity to magnetically-sensitive equipment.
