NORTHRIDGE, California – In one of country music’s most prestigious musical events of the year, rental systems provider ATK/Audiotek of Valencia, California supplied a multi-array JBL VERTEC® line array system for the 42nd Annual Country Music Association (CMA) Awards on November 12. The Awards were held at the Sommet Center in Nashville and broadcast live on ABC to a national audience. The CMA Awards is the premier annual event for the country music industry, and this year’s show was co-hosted by Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood. Featured performers included Kenny Chesney, Brooks & Dunn, The Eagles, George Strait, Sugarland and Keith Urban, among others.
The Awards featured two stages placed side by side, enabling a live performance to immediately lead into another without the need for a commercial break. Baltzell Audio Design specified a sound system design based upon JBL VERTEC, with a total of eight flown line arrays. Deployed by ATK/Audiotek, the main PA system included two 16-element VT4889 full-size line arrays, arranged in a left-right configuration. Additionally, two out-fill arrays, each containing 13 VT4889 loudspeakers, were dedicated to seating areas outside the coverage pattern of the main arrays. A total of 14 VT4880A Ultra-Long Excursion arrayable subwoofers provided low-frequency support, while three delay arrays each featured 10 VT4889 loudspeakers. These were arranged in a left-center-right configuration at the back of the arena. Six VT4887 compact line array elements provided front fill coverage to critical forward seating areas. The system also featured a total of 72 JBL Control 25T loudspeakers installed under the first six rows of audience seating and masked by color-matching grilles.
In addition to hosting a variety of live performances, the Sommet Center is home to the Nashville Predators of the NHL. The Center was designed with multi-functionality in mind to accommodate a wide spectrum of events. “The venue was built asymmetrically, so it’s not a typical oval-shaped arena,” said Pat Baltzell of Baltzell Audio Design and (along with Rick Scheimer) one of two Front of House Engineers for the CMA Awards. “The arena was built for entertainment as well as hockey, with one end actually lower than the other, so you can easily load stage equipment onto the end designed for live entertainment. The opposite end has a large architecturally-designed bass trap that does a great job of managing frequencies below 100 Hz. This results in acoustical behavior that is very similar whether the arena is empty or full. There isn’t the usual consternation during sound checks where the event managers are worrying about what the audio will sound like during the event. In my opinion, this is one of the best-sounding arenas in the United States. So it puts us all at ease, because everyone—the producer, the artists and the sound crew—has a good idea of the way the system will sound on show night.”
Baltzell notes that the decision to use VERTEC line arrays is also based on consistent, predictable performance. “The VERTEC speakers do a great job,” Baltzell added. “I’ve been designing line array clusters for a number of years. For events like this, where you have a great deal of dialogue from hosts, presenters and winners, in addition to the musical numbers, the sound system needs to perform well for music as well as large-scale dialogue. The VERTEC line arrays provide that level of versatility.”
Michael Abbott, Audio Producer for the CMA Awards, confirmed satisfaction with the results achieved by the sound vendors and their choice of loudspeakers. “JBL VERTEC line arrays have proven to be consistent in providing clear, powerful and controllable sound for some of the world’s highest-profile live events and the CMA Awards was no different,” he noted. “The VERTEC system performed flawlessly and allowed us to stay focused on the task at hand.”

Baltzell Audio Design And ATK/Audiotek Take The Stage At 42nd Annual CMA Awards With JBL VERTEC® Line Arrays
Daktronics Delivers Great Sound To The Ole Miss Gridiron With JBL VLA Line Arrays
NORTHRIDGE, California – In a demanding application highlighting the high power and controllability of JBL VLA line arrays, Daktronics recently upgraded the sound system at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, home to the University of Mississippi football team in Oxford. The audio upgrade is part of a $6 million overhaul that includes the largest high-definition video display in the NCAA Southeastern Conference.
Home to the Ole Miss Rebels since 1915, Vaught-Hemingway Stadium holds more than 62,000. As part of the Southeastern Conference (SEC), Ole Miss faces some of the top college football programs each year. With the addition of the large high-definition LED screen before the 2008 football season, an equally powerful audio system was needed.
To that end, Daktronics designed and installed an end-zone system consisting of 12 JBL VLA601H line array loudspeakers configured in left-right hangs of six loudspeakers each. The system is supplemented by two JBL PD743 loudspeakers and two PD5212/64 loudspeakers. Crown I-Tech amplifiers power the system, which is configured via the Harman HiQnet™ System Architect™ platform.
“We needed a powerful system that was also highly controllable,” said Doug Dodge of Daktronics. “The VLA loudspeakers fit the bill and they have performed terrifically since we completed the installation.”

New CPX4 3LCD Hitachi Projector Offers Optimal Combination Of Portability, Performance And Convenience
-- The CPX4 Features Networking Functionality, Wireless Connectivity And A Short-Throw Lens --
CHULA VISTA, Calif., November 24, 2008 — Designed for portability and reliability with a host of enhanced features, Hitachi Home Electronics (America), Inc., Business Group today introduced the CPX4 3LCD projector. The new CPX4 projector weighs only 4.1 pounds, yet offers a brightness of 2,000 ANSI lumens and a variety of connectivity options.
The CPX4 offers networking capability, allowing for easy maintenance and monitoring. Through a wired or wireless LAN connection, an AV/IT administrator can monitor and diagnose the condition of every projector on the network. Additionally, the timing of switching the projector’s power on and off can be automatically set from a computer. When the CPX4 is connected to the network, it accesses the server and automatically matches its clock to the server time. Users can also control and monitor the projector(s) from a web browser without having to download and install application software. Moreover, when connecting an external hard disk to the projector, image data can be transmitted and deleted via the network.
With Hitachi’s proprietary My Image functionality, AV/IT administrators can transfer still images, such as emergency alerts, from a PC to each projector on the network. When the My Image function is utilized, the images are automatically displayed on all the projectors, including ones that are not in use at the time.
This is ideal for applications in which multiple projectors are networked across a large space, such as a school, campus or large corporate environment.
The CPX4 also offers wireless connectivity, making it even easier to set up a presentation. Additionally, the CPX4’s Multi-Screen function allows four computer screens to be displayed simultaneously and wirelessly. The CPX4 is also enabled to display content via USB storage devices, SD cards or HDD media players, allowing for PC-less presentation. The CPX4 also enables easy setup with its Quick Start function, automatic vertical keystone correction, and resolution setting (allowing users to select the most appropriate screen ratio).
With a short-throw lens that displays 60-inch images at a distance of 4.9 feet, the CPX4 can be placed close to the screen, eliminating obstruction of the image. Adding to the user’s convenience are advanced features exclusive to Hitachi projectors such as My Screen, My Memory and My Button. A built-in 1W speaker means no need for external audio devices, while the projector itself maintains a low noise level of 29 dB in Whisper Mode.
“As schools, businesses and houses of worship continue to implement projection technology, the criteria for selecting the ideal product remains consistent—performance, portability, ease of use and affordability,” said John Glad, product manager, Hitachi Home Electronics (America), Inc., Business Group. “By offering advanced connectivity, light weight and a short-throw lens, the CPX4 projector addresses all these needs at a very reasonable price point.”

The CP-X10000 includes an RS-232 network bridge for serial pass through, along with a mechanical shutter for blank mode. The CP-X10000 also offers Closed Captioning functionality.
In designing the CP-X10000, Hitachi also placed strong emphasis on security, as the projector features Hitachi’s proprietary My Image Campus Notification System. Anti-theft features include a security bar and transition detector.
“As projectors have become more viable solutions for very large environments, including rental and staging, the demand for advanced flexibility and connectivity is equal to the demand for brightness and clarity,” said John Glad, product manager, Hitachi Home Electronics (America), Inc., Business Group. “The CP-X10000 3LCD Professional Series projector meets all these criteria while maintaining an affordable price point.”
Electro Acoustics, Inc. Brings Sound At St. Paul the Apostle Church To The Next Level With JBL VRX Line Arrays
NORTHRIDGE, California – Reinforcing the power and ease of installation of JBL VRX portable line arrays, systems integrator Electro Acoustics, Inc. recently designed and installed a new audio system at St. Paul the Apostle Church in Richardson, Texas.
With an acoustically challenging worship space and outdated audio equipment to boot, the 30-year-old Church needed a new system that would provide clear speech during the services. “The Church has a tile floor, brick walls, a wood ceiling and pews without cushions, so there were some issues from an acoustic standpoint,” said Chris Jordan, President of Electro Acoustics. “They also had at least two previous systems in the space, and there was a definite need for a sound system renovation.”
During the acoustical analysis portion of the project, Jordan and his team took some measures to make the 600-seat worship space more acoustically friendly. “We measured the reverberation time in the space and installed acoustic panels to reduce that time to an acceptable level,” Jordan said. “We also discovered that they had a return air vent that made a lot of noise, so we designed a baffle to counteract that. Those two changes made a substantial difference.”
With those improvements in place, Electro Acoustics designed an audio system featuring three arrays in a left-center-right configuration, hung from the ceiling above the main stage. “We found that the directivity of line arrays is superior to single, 2-way boxes and the directivity of line arrays provides a lower articulation loss of consonants,” Jordan noted.
Electro Acoustics designed and installed a JBL VRX line array system for St. Paul the Apostle Church in Richardson, Texas. The line arrays are spaced approximately 12 feet from each other, with each array containing three VRX928LA line array loudspeakers and one VRX915S arrayable subwoofer. Having used VRX line arrays on multiple projects in the past, Jordan found them to be the ideal solution at St. Paul the Apostle Church. “The VRX loudspeakers are very easy to use, you can quickly hang and snap them together, so they’re easy to install,” he said. “Aesthetics was important in this project, and the VRX loudspeakers look very nice. The price was also very reasonable, and the performance is just outstanding.”

Clair Brothers Systems Revamps Audio At RBC Center With JBL VLA, VERTEC® and Application Engineered® Series Loudspeakers
NORTHRIDGE, California – Demonstrating the superior power handling and articulation of JBL VLA series line arrays, as well as the interoperability of JBL loudspeakers across product lines, Clair Brothers Systems recently upgraded the audio system at the RBC Center in Raleigh, North Carolina. The Center’s new system features a combination of JBL VLA and VERTEC® line arrays, as well as Application Engineered® (AE) series loudspeakers.
The RBC Center is home to the Carolina Hurricanes of the National Hockey League and the North Carolina State University men’s basketball team. The arena seats 19,722 for basketball and 18,680 for hockey, including 75 luxury suites and 2,000 club seats. The arena also hosts numerous other events, ranging from WWE contests to rock concerts.
According to Jim Devenney, Senior Audio Designer, for Clair Brothers, the audio system at the RBC Center was due for an overhaul. “The system originally installed in the building had lots of clusters and lots of overlap that degraded the system’s intelligibility,” he said. “The system was also underpowered for the events the arena was used for, particularly the Hurricanes and NC State basketball. The goals of the new system were to alleviate those problems and to give the customer the ability to zone the system for different event seating situations.”
For this combination of power and flexibility, Clair Brothers installed a system that consisted of eight arrays each containing 10 VLA901 loudspeakers hanging from the center of the roof, along with two arrays each containing four VLA601 loudspeakers for basketball floor fills. Additionally, four arrays each containing six VT4880A arrayable subwoofers provide additional low-frequency support. Five AM6212 loudspeakers were installed in the scoreboard for center floor/ice fill, while 24 AM4212 loudspeakers were installed for very upper seat delay fill.
“The coverage of the arena with the eight VLA arrays is excellent and the VT4880A subwoofers give the system an extra dynamic and fullness quality,” Devenney said. “The two VLA601 clusters do an excellent job of filling in the floor from the basketball court to the hockey dashers at the ends of the arena.”
Clair Brothers Systems upgraded the audio system at the RBC Center with JBL VLA, VERTEC and AE loudspeakers. Devenney added that the installation provided very few issues or challenges—a rarity for projects of this scale. “The project was done on schedule and within budget,” Devenney said. “Actually, through the value engineering process and with the help of JBL’s Brad Ricks, we had some considerable savings for the customer. All the building people, especially Barry Steiman’s production staff, were very supportive of the project and very helpful during the install.”

Our years of satisfaction with Studer products made the selection of the OnAir 3000 very easy,” Horvat continued.
The OnAir 3000 design is based on a completely modular desk and a new DSP engine. The fader module includes six fader strips, and up to eight fader modules may be fitted, giving a maximum console size of 48 faders. Layout options range from a highly comprehensive engineer-operated continuity console to a single fader panel for DJ and newsroom use or even a PC-operated system with no physical desk controls. The console has three main stereo mix buses plus an audition facility, four stereo aux. buses, 16 mix-minus sends, configurable as AUXes and three independent studio monitoring circuits and offers full dynamics, EQ and input/output routing in each channel.
Director of Radio Murski val, Dejan Fujs, states, “The OnAir 3000 is responsible for creating new ways of understanding radio equipment and new ways of achieving high quality radio editing and broadcasting. The user-friendly interface allows everybody involved, from the sound engineers to the reporters and announcers, to use this equipment effectively and efficiently. The employees at Radio Murski val are extremely satisfied with the OnAir 3000, but even more so are the listeners.”
Editor-in-chief of Radio Murski val, Marjan Dora, explained, “We are extremely satisfied with the acquisition of the OnAir 3000 to our broadcast studio. The desk was easy to install and we now have the ability to compete in a very strong European market.”

A Divine Performance of Crown Amplifiers at Heaven’s Rehearsal Event
November 19, 2008
ELKHART, Indiana – Powering audio in a major live sound application, PA Plus provided live sound reinforcement for “Heaven’s Rehearsal,” a multi-denominational musical event that featured a house band, full orchestra and five-hundred member choir. The event took place on November 1, at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, Canada.
PA Plus utilized 80 Crown I-Tech amplifiers to power the large format JBL VerTec® line array. “In order to maintain both group and independent control over all the arrays, we chose to use the Crown I-Tech amplifiers along with HiQnet™ System Architect™ software to provide all the required processing,” stated Mark Radu, Systems Engineer of PA Plus. “We turned the basic 30,000 seat system within System Architect and stored it as a preset. As we added array sections to attain coverage up to the full 55,000-seat capacity, the system was re-tuned and saved as a preset. The Crown I-Tech amplifiers and System Architect gave us all the processing power and flexibility we needed.”
The Rogers Centre proved to be an extremely acoustically challenging venue, due to its massive amount of concrete and glass with a retractable steel dome roof that extends 325ft above the field. Additionally, a large portion of ticket sales were sold during the day of the event, therefore there was no accurate way to predict what areas of the stadium would need sound coverage.
“The system design worked as planned and we were able to focus acoustic energy only where it needed and minimize spill,” added Radu. “John Lacina, our senior engineer, did a great job with the FOH mix and was really able to make the system shine in such an acoustically demanding environment. Overall, considering all the challenges involved, I think everyone was pleasantly surprised with the final result.”

Ace Audio Relies On Crown Audio For Guitar Under The Stars Event
Succeeding in an acoustically challenging and unique live sound venue, Ace Audio provided the sound reinforcement system for the “Guitar Under The Stars” event, an outdoor concert held at the Riverfront Recapture in Harford, Connecticut. The “Guitar Under The Stars Event” has become a yearly tradition that draws thousands to the Hartford riverfront for a full day of music.
Crown I-Tech 4000’s and 8000’s were utilized for Front of House and monitors while XTi 4000s amplifiers powered the fill speakers. “Three years ago we switched to Crown I-Tech amplifiers, and it’s been a major plus for our company,” stated Mike Goodreau, President of Ace Audio. “The reduced size and weight of the amps allows us to use smaller trucks and the low current draw of I-Tech helps us in smaller venues with inadequate AC power. Not to mention the service support we have received from Crown has been excellent.”
The Riverfront Recapture presents multiple issues as a live concert venue. “The highway runs overhead to one side and there is boat noise from the river behind the stage. Additionally, there is very limited access for trucks to unload equipment and the PA is difficult to place properly. For this reason a sound system with good pattern control and high intelligibility is required,” stated Mr. Goodreau.
Crown amplifiers powered JBL speakers at all points in the venue. Ace Audio implemented eight JBL VerTec 4888 midsize line array loudspeakers, four JBL SRX712M as front and side fills, and eight JBL SRX712M for monitors. Three dbx 4800 processors were used for front of house and monitors in addition to four dbx 2231 and eight dbx 166XL processors. Harman HiQnet™ System Architect™ was utilized to configure the dbx DriveRack 4800 processors.
Ultimately the show was a major success. “The Riverfront staff was very pleased, and complimented us on our quality of sound and the little amount of time it took for us to set up,” said Mr. Goodreau. “I left the show with new clients in addition to the attention of many new prospects as well!”

ProSound & Video, Inc. And PlanNet Bring Music To Shoppers’ Ears With JBL Loudspeakers
In a high-profile yet visually discreet testament to the sonic fidelity of JBL Control® Contractor series loudspeakers, ProSound & Video, Inc. recently installed a comprehensive audio system at The Americana at Brand, a new outdoor shopping community in Glendale, California. The system features 105 JBL Control 25AV surface-mount loudspeakers, 126 JBL Control 26CT ceiling speakers, and numerous JBL SB210 subwoofers.
The Americana at Brand has 75 retail shops, a variety of dining options, a children’s playground, as well as 100 condominiums and 238 apartments. Caruso Affiliated, the owner of The Americana at Brand, wanted background music throughout the outdoor property, yet the speakers needed to be visually unobtrusive. To accomplish this goal, consultant firm PlanNet Consulting designed an audio system that draws visitors into an enjoyable atmosphere the minute they set foot on the property. Speakers line the perimeters, synchronized with the parking lot systems, as visitors approach the shopping area.
According to Tim Waters, CTS, Principal Consultant and Manager of Audiovisual Practice at PlanNet, JBL’s commitment to customer and quality care played a huge part in the decision to use JBL for the project. “JBL was able to mock-up, in both their outdoor and indoor facilities, various demonstrations for key Caruso stakeholders,” Waters said. This allowed the Caruso team to make key decisions to listen for the best quality of a combination of speakers, visualize their sizes and be able to design them unobtrusively into the architecture and landscaping. They even custom designed light pole bases to house the Control 25AV speakers along the streets.
The audio systems at The Americana at Brand include a background music distribution system throughout the facility, which includes the integration of loudspeakers into decorative poles and trees on the property, as well as a fountain area system for the “Waters of Americana.” Wet Designs was in charge of the fountain design and took part in the auditioning of the speaker system to ensure that it provided high impact and clarity to properly complement the fountain show. The background music distribution system includes Control 26CT ceiling speakers and Control 25AV surface-mount loudspeakers. The entire system is controlled via a BSS Soundweb London platform.
According to Joe Byrne of ProSound & Video, Inc., the Control 25AV loudspeakers met a variety of criteria for use in the outdoor areas. “The durability and weatherproofing of the Control 25AV’s is excellent,” he said. “They’re compact and they have good fidelity for such a small speaker. We use them all the time so we know that they will perform reliably.”
To keep the system as discreet as possible, Byrne drew on his own creativity as well as the wide coverage pattern of the Control 29AV speakers for the fountain system, where the audio is synchronized with a periodic “fountain show” that draws shoppers to the fountain area at the front of the shopping space. “We built a system fountain featuring seven JBL Control 29AV loudspeakers that provide sound in a 360-degree pattern,” Byrne said. “We also placed three of the SB210 subwoofers in flowerbeds. We have complete coverage with no gaps, but all the speakers are very well hidden.”

Seattle’s Famous Benaroya Hall Upgrades Sound System With Soundcraft Vi6™
The ease of operation of the Soundcraft Vi6 is being showcased at Seattle’s famous Benaroya Hall. Home of the Seattle Symphony, the 2,500-seat S. Mark Taper Foundation Auditorium is Seattle’s first facility designed exclusively for symphonic music performances and Soundcraft consoles provide outstanding sound quality and versatility for every performance. Celebrating 10 years as one of the nation’s premier venues for live symphonic music, Benaroya Hall sound engineers chose to upgrade their sound reinforcement system with three Soundcraft Vi Series digital mixing consoles – two Vi6’s and a Vi4 - for the 550-seat Recital Hall.
Soundcraft products are no strangers to the Benaroya Hall and the introduction of the Vi6 was the logical next step in upgrading the quality of the sound system. The hall previously featured analog boards by Soundcraft and the effects of the digital board were instantly felt as the sound quality in the hall was improved tremendously. Audio Director for the Benaroya Hall, Tom Akoury, states, “Installing the Vi6 was an unbelievable upgrade in sound quality and the sound engineers immediately commented on the intuitiveness and versatility of the Vi6. We were able to install the console without any difficulties and within 15 minutes we were very comfortable mixing on the board.”
The Soundcraft Vi6 console is designed to the reliability standards of Studer Vista and has the intuitive Vistonics II interface allowing engineers to control the board exactly where they are looking. “The board is designed with engineers in mind,” continued Akoury. “With other consoles, engineers are sidetracked by paging through multiple books and sometimes losing focus or train of thought. With the Vi6, engineers have the ability to save shows and operate the board without any books. The intuitiveness of the board and all of its capabilities has made my job easier and the overall ease of operation is truly a lifesaver.”
The diversity of the Benaroya Hall’s performances requires sound engineers to quickly and efficiently prepare for multiple concerts in the same day ranging from symphony’s to rock and roll. Akoury adds, “We have a lot of turnarounds in concerts and the timing of everything has to be perfect. With the Vi6 we are able to preprogram the console for the second show, which reduces the sound check time tremendously. We were really killing ourselves for the past seven years without the Vi6.”
The Vi6 is loaded with upgrades and boasts an impressive input-to-mix capacity of 64, or 96 channels mapped out on 32 motorized faders. These can be assigned to 32 outputs, plus a stereo and mono mix, that can be combined in any group, aux and matrix buses. The Vi6 is also HiQnet™ enabled allowing the desk to become a control point for a comprehensive Harman Pro Group system at the Benaroya Hall that includes AKG C414 microphones and JBL VERTEC® speakers powered by Crown Macro-Tech amplifiers.

4X Audio Powers Sound System at New TRE Nightclub in Sacramento with BSS Audio
In an ambitious and successful project to provide the optimal audio system, 4X Audio has looked to BSS Audio to provide ultimate control and ease of use for its recently developed sound system at the new TRE Nightclub, in Sacramento California. TRE is a brand new upscale nightclub that also includes a full restaurant and lounge.
For the project, 4X Audio utilized both BSS Audio Soundweb London BLU-80 processors and sw9012 remote source/preset selectors. “We utilize the BLU-80s constantly because of their input and output flexibility, as well as their reliable functionality, programming and rock solid networked audio,” stated 4X Audio sound integrator Doug Pumphrey. “The client wanted to create something larger and of higher quality than anything that had ever been installed in a Northern California nightclub.” The Soundweb London BLU-80 offers configurable I/O, configurable signal processing and CobraNet audio and has open architecture which is fully configurable through HiQnet™ London Architect.
Additionally, JBL speakers were used throughout the restaurant, bar and patio area. This includes 35 JBL Control 226CT ceiling speakers, 16 JBL Control 19CS ceiling subwoofers and eight JBL Control 28A/V surface mounted speakers. Installed in the main dance room and DJ area were eight JBL VP7212/64DPAN powered high output loudspeakers, eight VPSB7118DPAN powered high output 18’’ subwoofers, and two JBL PRX512M self-powered monitor speakers. “The main challenge for this project was creating smooth coverage of the audio system throughout the restaurant and lounge areas, while simultaneously providing smooth and high energy coverage for the dance floor, which is located in the center of the venue,” said Carl Sagen, lead installation technician at 4X Audio.
Additional Harman products used in the installation included multiple Crown XTi 1000 and XTi 2000 amplifiers that powered the speakers in the restaurant, bar and patio areas of the building.
Audio Visions And JBL VERTEC® Line Arrays Deliver Sound To The Heartland At River City Roundup
Reinforcing the ease of use, power and fidelity of JBL VERTEC® line arrays, regional audio system provider Audio Visions deployed a VERTEC system for Ak-Sar-Ben’s River City Roundup at the Qwest Center in Omaha, Nebraska. A 27 year-old family festival that celebrates the western and agricultural heritage of the region, the major Midwestern rodeo event took place September 27-29. Post-competition live entertainment was provided by Jessica Simpson, Larry the Cable Guy and Rodney Atkins.
Audio Visions supplied a robust, carefully designed audio system including a total of 72 JBL VERTEC enclosures of various types. Twelve VT4889 large-format line array elements per side were supplemented by 12 VT4880A Ultra Long Excursion arrayable subwoofers per side. Additionally, 12 VT4888 midsize line array elements per side were deployed for out-fill arrays. Crown MacroTech amplifiers powered the VT4889 and VT4888 loudspeakers.
According to Elliot Nielsen of Audio Visions, the nature of the event created some challenging conditions. “The stage was 14 feet high because it needed to allow riders on horseback to pass underneath,” Nielsen said. “So the loudspeaker arrays were positioned unusually high, even for a large indoor venue like the Qwest Center. The top box was 54 feet in the air.”
Leveraging the predictable controllability of the VERTEC loudspeakers, Audio Visions configured the system with dbx DriveRack 4800 Loudspeaker Management Systems loaded with JBL’s new V4 DSP presets. Harman’s HiQnet™ System Architect software interface was used for remote control and monitoring. “I’m really liking System Architect,” Nielsen said. “It would be hard for me to go back to anything that I couldn’t use to remotely configure a system.”
Nielsen pointed out the challenge of compromising the summation of the waveguide patterns between the bottoms of the main and out-fill arrays, as is often the case with systems that utilize side hangs of line arrays. “The side hang at River City Roundup has to cover a significant amount of vertical real estate,” Nielsen said. “Starting with the top seat on the side at a height of 85 feet covering nearly to the floor with a bottom sight angle of over 40 degrees, the array becomes highly arced. So, with the main hang being a typical 'J' shape, there was an excess of overlap at the bottom, and as fate would have it, a portion of that overlap squarely hit the off-center mix position. I aimed the side hangs to get the smoothest blend between main and out-fill arrays for the majority of the seats. Gain shading and separate signal processing helped optimize the hot spots for the remaining two percent of the affected seats.”
As an audio rental firm that relies heavily on VERTEC line arrays for its live staging events, Audio Visions has built a strong and successful professional relationship with JBL. “Our company is predominately a VERTEC house because of its popularity in our region. A lot of other companies in the area own VERTEC which makes it a great choice whenever we need to find more boxes,” Nielsen added. “For me as a system technician, it’s very easy to configure and the rig goes up really quickly.”

Neumann has installed Hitachi FXDUO77 interactive whiteboards, as well as award winning Hitachi CP-A100 3LCD projectors as part of the Hitachi CP-A100+FXDuo Bundle.
Neumann College is a private Roman Catholic, coeducational college comprised of 3,000 students. The College offers undergraduate degrees in a broad variety of subjects, six graduate programs, and an accelerated bachelor's degree program for adults. Neumann seeks to educate a diverse population of students in a scholarly, supportive, and caring environment.
Neumann understands the value of the StarBoard as an educational tool and has worked to ensure that both professors and students can utilize and benefit from the technology. “We haven’t had the boards for long but they are already very popular and extremely well received by our faculty and students. The boards are being used for programs to educate professors on course management software in addition to integrating them into normal classes that take place in the labs,” stated Neumann College media specialist Dan Smith. “We are particularly impressed with its ease of use.” The Hitachi StarBoard’s high touch resolution also factored into the decision to go with Hitachi. “Other boards we’ve had in the past required some type of tool to perform the interaction. With the Hitachi StarBoard the ability to just use your finger makes it extremely easy to use.”
While Neumann is still in the beginning stages of utilizing the StarBoards Mr. Smith sees the potential to expand the technology into other areas of the college. “There is no doubt that we would look to Hitachi in the future if we were to add additional interactive whiteboards. The StarBoard is a wonderful and productive tool that has been a great addition to the learning environment.”

The Soundcraft Vi6 was among the elite attendees invited to the final stop of a 24-hour non-stop party hosted by Diesel to celebrate its 30th anniversary around the world. The “Diesel xXx Rock and Roll Circus” took place in 17 major cities across the world; commencing in Tokyo and moving to Beijing, Dubai, Athens, Amsterdam, Milan, Zurich, Munich, Paris, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Barcelona, Oslo, Helsinki, London, Sao Paulo, and finally had its grand finale on Pier 3 in Brooklyn, New York on Saturday, October 11.
ESP New York chose the Vi6 for its outstanding audio quality and its ability to handle The Rock and Roll Circus that hosted numerous music artists performing in front of thousands of VIP guests.
T.I., N.E.R.D., Franz Ferdinand, M.I.A., Hot Chip, and Chaka Khan staged performed on the Brooklyn waterfront in front of a crowd of 5,000 VIP attendees, including celebrities Lindsay Lohan and actress Emma Roberts. Soundcraft’s Vi6 enhanced each of the performers’ music exemplifying what a fantastic sounding board it is.
All the engineers involved with the show used the boards and programmed individual shows for each performer prior to show time. ESP New York’s Monitor Engineer, Steve Swope, educated the engineers on the Vi6’s capabilities. “The amount of inputs/outputs and accessibility makes the Vi6 perfect for this venue,” said Swope. “The user-friendly interface allowed the sound engineers to operate the console without any difficulties despite having very little experience on the Vi6.”
With the flexibility of the Vi6, engineers had the ability to digitally patch all content ahead of time to any specific location. This preparation allowed them to switch and adjust any problems that may have arisen without any interruption or loss of sound quality. ESP New York’s Glenn Davis and Bill Danilczyk met at Front Of House, and commenting on the potential of the system, Davis states, “I can route signals through this console more than any other digital console. The functionality in terms of outputs, routing, and flexibility is far superior and the sonic quality is outstanding. All of the design work, planning and layout were perfect every time.”
The Rock and Roll Circus went exactly as planned and the mash ups between T.I. /Franz Ferdinand and M.I.A./ N.E.R.D. were successful with the operation of 195 mic inputs. “The ability to pre-label the show ahead of time allowed the show to run seamlessly without any difficulties,” said Davis.
Tony Berger of Relevent produced the show that featured not only popular music acts but also an array of spectacular entertainment. Cabaret performers, fire-eaters, trapeze artists, sword swallowing acts, and female roller derby squads dazzled guests.

STEVEN TRACY OF THE MYRIAD AUGMENTS VERSATILE STYLE WITH EVENTIDE’S MODFACTOR STOMPBOX
Currently touring with an Eventide ModFactor, Steven Tracy of Seattle-based rock band, The Myriad, is exploiting the versatility and high performance of Eventide’s newest stompbox. Tracy, a guitarist, pianist and keyboardist, purchased the ModFactor for its high-quality modulation effects and portability while The Myriad, MTV2’s Breakout Band of the Year, travels across the United States.
The Myriad recently released the album “With Arrows, With Poise” (Koch Records) and was featured on MTV as the “Artist of the Week” at the time of the release. The album was mixed at Hansa Studios in Berlin, Germany by Michael Ilbert (The Cardigans, Kent, The Hives) and mastered at Abbey Road Studios in London, England by Adam Nunn (Air, Radiohead, Franz Ferdinand, George Martin, Mogwai), as well as at acclaimed Sterling Sound in New York City by Greg Calbi (Beastie Boys, John Mayer, Interpol, Norah Jones). Since the album's release, the band has toured extensively, playing with bands such as Lovedrug, mewithoutYou, Mutemath and As Tall As Lions.
The diversity of The Myriad’s music requires a comprehensive effects box that features immediate access to customized controls and studio quality performance. “The Myriad’s genre of music is very diverse and artistic and we need to replicate a wide variety of modulation effects to provide the same sonic complexity that we achieve in the studio,” Tracy said. “I chose ModFactor because it produces tremendous effects and because its capabilities are seemingly endless.”
ModFactor delivers studio quality performance with the speed and convenience of a stompbox. ModFactor also provides an added level of flexibility with built-in capabilities such as: a plug-and-play expression pedal input for control of wet/dry mix, or any combination of parameters; MIDI program change and parameter control; instrument or line level inputs and outputs; and seamless adaptation with a wide variety of amps and other foot pedals.
Commenting on the application, Eventide Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Ray Maxwell said, “With the range of tools available to recording artists and producers, it’s gratifying to see how today’s top performers, engineers and producers naturally gravitate to Eventide stompboxes in the same way rock icons Led Zeppelin and Frank Zappa used the original Eventide rack-mount processors to create their own signature sound.”
